Interesting and not totally correct. I have friends who lives in the # 1 rated community Green Valley AZ and they like it very well.

I know how much a lot of people love AZ and that's fine, but years before I retired, I found out I had to eliminate AZ from my list......

Here is why......

I went to AZ with Mr. Boomer. It was a business thing.....

A lot of women know the drill -- that Good Company-Wife Routine.....


(1) Insert coat hanger in mouth in order to better smile and nod.

(2) Carry one drink throughout the entire party -- never, ever more than one.

(3) Chew inside of mouth raw to prevent snorting said lone drink out one's nose when big boss tells you that he has been reincarnated and was once a woman.


....But I digress....so anyway......

I eliminated AZ because while I was there, my contact lenses stuck to my eyeballs and made my eyes feel gritty and look red and that made me somewhat grouchy.

I happen to love humidity.

When I went to AZ in search of paradise I found that after three days I had to make an emergency trip the 7-11 to get some chapstick for my dry bleeding lips. I decided I did not want to be addicted to chapstick, I like to stand under trees not over them and I did not like my car being sand blasted on a windy day.

ah..... 2 items stand out to me.

1. What is not special about this retirement community
Green Valley is very close to Mexico, which makes it very remote. In fact so close that there have been a few scenes with federales and desperados running through Green Valley. Given that this is a desert, the long term water supply is always a concern.

2. Medical facilities
The nearest hospitals to Green Valley are in Tucson, 24 miles away on the Interstate

'Nuff Said.

I read this on their link and I think I'll stay where I am. I've read too much about the Mexican Drug cartels to consider this option. Also thhe dry season is long enough here in the beautiful Villages without going to Arizonian extremes.

My sister and her husband spent a couple of winters in southern AZ..........and it took them quite a while for the dry, arid climate to grow on them. The "sandblasting" concept was real - that was their biggest beef. Everytime the winds would kick up, it got kinda nasty, I gather.

They now spend their winters in FL................ :)

Thanks for the excellent link. The write-up about TV was more extensive than the one about Green Valley. Reader scores (scroll down, right side of page) were higher for TV.

The write-up on TV seemed mostly accurate but I hadn't heard of "Homewood". Is it a different facility than Freedom Pointe? I looked on Google maps and it shows separate locations for the two, but another search refers to Homewood of Freedom Pointe. Are these two different facilities? Different names for the same facility? Thanks anyone who can fill me in.

Yup, every region of the country has their pros and cons.

It's definitly a great time to be looking for retirement locations. They're all over the country, making it easier for retirees to find the right place.

No Gators, Pythons, Lovebugs, Noseeems, Hurricanes, Tornados, in Arizona.

No Gila Monsters, 115 degree temps for 6 months in Florida.

My assessment is that Homewood was the "original" assisted living / nursing home. Its operation was taken over by Brookdale, who run Freedom Pointe. It's the same place, just under new management.

May be wrong, but . . .

Homewood exists as part of Freedom Pointe. It caters to those with memory problems, dementia and alzheimers. It is called "Village of Homewood" and they have a separate complex, their own bus for transportation, walking/wheelchair trail, and view of a beautiful lake. Often I see their bus in the parking lot at one of the squares during evening entertainment.

We used to have a Village of Homewood which was really an extended care facility located next to what is now Freedom Pointe and where the (I forget the name) extended care facility is now, pretty much dfirectly across El Camino Real from The Villages Regional Hospital. Although that one is not called Homewood as far as I know - different owner/operator - associated with (I think) Freedom Pointe).
