Attaching GPS or phone to plexi glass windshield
 

Has anyone used the suction cup devices to attach a GPS or cell phone or something along that line to the plexi-glass windshield? Does it hold in place? are there any problems that any one has had? Going to attempt this when we come to TV for a couple of weeks and wanted to know if anyone else has done this?

Not a problem, I attach my GPS to my plexi-glass windshield all the time. Good way to check the speed of my golf cart.

I've read in another thread that people have had things stolen from their golf carts. You don't leave your GPS if you get out of the cart do you?

Another question. Does anyone use the iPhone or Droid with the GPS App? If so, does it work similar to the Garmin and others and give you the MPH? I would be less inclined to leave the phone than the stand alone GPS.

It has been working fine with ours, too. Wifey attached it and it has been great because our rental goes 27 miles an hour down-hill, so I have had to slow down every once in awhile as we are scared of getting a ticket.

I have a Garmin and a Nexus One Android 2.2 phone. I recently visited The Villages looking at homes. The phones turn-by-turn worked much better. Partly because Google maps are more up to date than my older Garmin maps. But the Android also works better. Voice input is great, say "Navigate to 123 Main Street" and away you go. No more "recalculating", it just corrects. The voice instructions seemed more accurate and timely. You can layer items, traffic, restaurants, etc. On the cool side, it automatically switches to Street View to show you a picture of your destination when you arrive. The only downside on the phone was battery drain, I generally kept it on the charger.

Thanks Hal. We are due for new phones and I REALLY want a Droid, so that may be the determining factor. I've heard that the batteryis short lived and you have to find ways to work around that.

I have a golf gps that I attach to my golf cart window with the suction cup mount. However, it occasionally falls off the window and I have to reattach. Not a big problem but suction cups only hold for so long unless someone else has a solution to this. When I attach the suction cup I wet the inside of the cup.

A little clarification so I don't mislead you Greg. Battery life is not a unique issue, all smartphones need daily charging. The thing with Navigation is that it's an intensely active app. It stops the screen from going to sleep, it's keeps the processor busy, continually communicating and keeping the GPS active, and constantly sending coordinates and downloading map updates from the Internet to refresh the screen.
