Anyone else agree that in some cases it would be helpful if the original Thread Post date appeared either next to the Heading or next to the name of the original poster. That would quickly enable identifying if the post is new or old.

The software does not provide for that. If a thread is current, it moves to the top of the list. The older it is, the lower it is in the index. Some of our threads are weeks old but still active and continue to be moved to the top with each new post. Some threads are years old, but keep moving to the top when there is a new post.
