About tonight’s band in Spanish springs.

‘Not just a swing band, they also perform Latin dance favorites, jazz standards, and pop tunes!‘

There is a Jazz trio that plays at the squares. Sorry, don't remember the name of the group.

The one band that stands out and plays wonderful jazz as well as other swing type music is "The Valerie Gillespie band" . Valerie has been entertaining beautifully in the Villages all the way back when we would dance to her music at Katie Bells.

Valerie Gillespie is great, but plays infrequently. I think her group is performing once in May, check the entertainment schedule. There is also a jazz club that periodically has a show that's free/inexpensive at the Savannah Center or one of the regional centers.

Yes and there is plenty of seating available when they play. No need to bring your own chairs :boxing2:

Valerie Gillespie plays once a month at the Squares and every Friday evening at Palmer Country Club. There are two Jazz Clubs -
at Laurel Manor and Paradise.

Valerie Gillespie Ensemble is fantastic, but is down to once a month in the squares. Her next show is the 8th in Spanish Springs.

She has also been playing every Friday at Palmer Legends, you'd need to call them to see if she still is.

The Valerie Gillespie Ensemble, watch for them in the entertainment section of the Village paper.

Unfortunately, jazz performances are few and far between and not very popular hence all the open seats at Town Squares when jazz is played. There's some truth in the following; " a jazz musician is one who drives 75 miles in a 1999 Ford to get paid $50 for a 4 hour gig."

Are there any jazz clubs anywhere nice little place to get a cocktail dark groovy anywhere between here and Ocala or here and God forbid Orlando

RicNic 04-25-2022 08:16 AM

Thank you everyone for your input. I hope someday soon my wife and I will be ready to move down there to enjoy the fun and the sun ( and the jazz music). To paraphrase Jerry and Linda the Newcomers: We’ll see you when we get there.

A huge number of people here know how to do at least a little swing dancing and slow dancing. They do it to rock—why not do it to the music it was meant for. I’d love to have bands that are vocal-based and play the Great American Songbook—like what Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald sang. Composers like Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart, and the Gershwins. That’s my favorite music by far. It’s true that it wouldn’t draw as many people—especially people who don’t live here and aren’t old enough to live here. Piano, bass, a jazz guitar, a sensitive and quiet jazz drummer, and a good singer. That’s all we would need.

I was at LSL on April 18th and witnessed enough jazz for the year.
