Beware of Nails & Screws in New Construction
 

Beware of getting a nail or screw in your tires in the new construction areas. We were there the other day, checking on brother's new home and getting mail in the St. John's area. The next day, we had a flat tire. It couldn't be plugged, so had to get a new one. Be careful!!

How do you suggest being careful other than not driving through construction areas?

Have my wife walk ahead of me driving the car looking for screws and nails?

Yes, I agree this can be a very real problem, we had 2 or 3 nails/screws in tires this first years or so after we moved in, lots of construction in the area around our house. Fortunately, none of our cars were all wheel drive, and all of the tires were repairable. Several years ago, I think there was an effort to have a truck with a really big magnet towed behind it go around the construction area to control the amount of nails and screws in the streets.

When we were building and visiting our house in St Cats, we had 2 flats the first week. Bought tire insurance and had a total of 6 flats. It paid for itself.

With the price of gas, she should push.

If, you get a nail in a tire, do not pull it out. It is usually a far slower leak with the nail in the hole than an opened hole. Driving on a flat tire, destroys the tire. Can't be repaired? Sometimes the goal is to sell you a new tire.

The best way to patch a tire, a tubeless tire, is not to use a plug but to take the tire off the rim and patch it on the inside.

They can always be plugged. Those who tell you they can’t want to sell you a tire. I keep my own kit and have only failed once . Had to add TPMS safe fix-a-flat on that one and it held tight

Grrrr... I am just going through this too. $300 to replace a back tire on my motorcycle. Worst part is that was a brand new tire from last season.

At this point all of Florida is a construction zone so you have to watch all paved and unpaved roads

I have picked up nails and screws in tires over the years but also picked up a couple things you wouldn’t think would flatten a tire. A house key and a bungee cord
