Water heater?
 

My State Select water heater is 11 years old. It stopped working a few weeks ago and Broward came out and "reset it." It worked for about 4 weeks but has now stopped heating water. Can I reset it myself?

If you google state select water heater reset button you will find a few pages describing how to reset it yourself.

If this has never happened in 11 years but has now happened twice in the last four weeks it might be time for a new water heater. Dealing with no hot water, going through the effort of resetting it, or trying to troubleshoot the cause is difficult and could be expensive. With a heater that old, it might just be time to replace it and start fresh.

Once your water heater has been reset, it may take between 12 and 24 hours for your water heater to resume normal operation.

The 'reset' button is a circuit breaker on your heating element. Almost certainly it is your bottom element which has corroded. It needs to be replaced. If you are handy you can do this yourself.

I agree, if the reset button is operating, you need to replace the heater element, The is a relatively east DIY project. Turn of the power, turn of the water supply to the water heater, and connect a hose to the water heater drain faucet, and drain it. While you are doing this, plan on replacing the expansion tank, as these have a typical life of 5 to 7 years. Get the replacement heater element, take a picture of the existing wiring, and follow the MFG instructions for completing the replacement. Make sure the expansion tank is set to the corrent pressure, at our house this was 70 PSI, they typically come charged to 40 PSI.

Electric easy to replace. With 10 years on it I just place it. On well water I use I’d buy the 12 year warranty ones at my last location. They never lasted 12 years. So I would get free one in about 8 to 10 year when the 12 year warranty one failed.

Heating Element needs Replacement!

I don’t think I would call this a typical DIY project, 11+ years of rust on the element assembly plus the fact that it’s being supplied by 220 volts, it may be on a concrete floor, you are standing on the concrete floor and it’s water heater.
None of these combinations are good.
Press the reset button if it doesn’t reset call a qualified electrician.

If you have the proper coverage with BROWARD, they will replace it with a new one.

They need to replace it or at least change out the heating element that is what you pay them for.

Your heater is waaay past it’s expected life span. Get a tankless heater. They’re good for 20 years, maybe outliving you! I’ve had them in four houses over the past 25 years, would never go back to a tank heater. Gas bill went down by about one-third.

At eleven years old you might want to think about replacing it before you have a flood in the garage or house.
