Which CAT5 / CAT6 cables to which rooms?

As with most new homes, my low voltage cabinet contained a bunch of non-terminated cables. There's no identification of which cable goes to which room. An internet service company came in and attached their service to 3 cables and installed their equipment in the room of our choice.

However, they did not label or tell us what rooms those other connections were for. :(

How do I discover which cable is for which room?
Thanks!

You can buy a circuit tester on Amazon for 20 bucks or if you know how to
use a multi-meter you can DIY. Check YouTube for how to videos.

Perfect! Thanks Terry.

Simply disconnect each cable in the low voltage box one at a time and see which room’s piece of equipment stops working.

NOT what I asked. I want to identify which room each cable goes to. Almost every room has NO equipment connected, and almost every cable has NO termination.

The tone tester, or a multimeter test will do what I asked.

Easiest way since the CABLES ARE NOT TERMINATED, take 2 wires strip the ends and twist together, then go to the next cable and do the same with a different pair of conductors. Do this for all of the cables with a different pair in each cable, and make a list. Then go to each room and with a Ohmeter or continuity tester see which pairs are shorted, and mark your list with the room name. Post the list in the low voltage box for future reference.

It should but doesn't shock me with the price paid how lazy that is that nothing is marked and nothing is finished in the low voltage box. Unprofessional.

I was going to suggest a Fox and Hound tool but looked up the price and realized that for a job that small, the tool is way too costly. What someone said about a simple ohm meter will work fine.

A toner is what you need. Contact me if you need help.
