In need of 1 smear of thermal paste!
If there's anyone in/near the Historic side, who has thermal paste and can spare a smear, I'd really appreciate it. I'd even pay you a couple bucks for it.
I just really REALLY hate the idea of having to buy a whole brand new syringe of the stuff, to reseat one heat sink. And I'm not paying $40 for a computer store to do it for me, when I can do it myself for the cost of the paste. If no one has any, and the Computer Club needs some, I'll buy it, use it for my heat sink, and donate the rest of the syringe to you. I imagine the Computer Club has some though. That's why I'm posting here. If you're in the area of Spanish Springs and can spare a little let me know here, I can come pick it up and return the syringe within the (same) day (that I pick it up). |

then you just need the equivalent of one big DROP of the stuff. But this stuff isn't liquid, therefore there's no "drop." It's just a smear, because you let this little bit fall on the back of the heat sink in the center of it. Then you "seat" the sink back onto the platen beneath it. When you tighten the screws, the compound literally smears itself to the edges of the platen. This compound provides a conductive and protective layer between the heat sink and the platen, so that heat created by the machinery is absorbed through the sink and dispersed - thus preventing overheating. A fan (or in my case multiple fans) add more overheating protection. But the heat sink protects the motherboard directly. The fans assist, plus they protect all the cards and other internals. But since it's really not something most people ever have to deal with or even know about, I figured I'd explain what it all means. Some day you might need to have this done and if you're comfortable with tinkering with machines, it's really a very simple process that takes less than 10 minutes and needs only the compound, good eyesight, a steady hand, and an eye-glass screwdriver. |
I saw it at Trak Auto right next to the blinker fluid and the 10-pronged bacon forks.

Problem solved, I will be meeting with the OP, to share the heatsink (aka thermal compound paste) for the project.
