Ceiling fans question
 

Hi all,

Just wondering - do the majority of installed ceiling fans have the option for a light kit or not? Or ... do they have a light kit installed already?

Most of them have an option to add a light kit. You just remove the round plate at the bottom of the fan and install the light.

Note that every room will also have a wall outlet that can be turned on and off from a wall switch, if you prefer to use a lamp instead of a ceiling fan light.

As noted above, remove the bottom cover plate, 2 or 3 screws. You should find a connector, with either 2 separate connectors or a single connector with 2 wires (blue and white). The lamp assemblies are typically standard (Lowe's, Home Depot), however, check that the connector is the same as what is installed in your house.

Also, you will probably need to remove the existing fan to connect the BLUE wire to the BLACK hot wire. If you are lucky, there will be room to get to the wires without removing the existing fan. Our house had an additional RED wiring from the wall switch, if you have this then you can connect the BLUE wire to the RED wire, and at the wall switch change the existing switch out to a dual unit, now you can control the fan from one switch and the light from the other. We did this on all 4 or 5 fans in our house.

Just did this project this weekend. This kit from Lowes fits my Kichler fan perfectly. $47. Not sure why it says access denied, takes you right to the Lowes site and product.

You take the bottom cap off (four screws) and then disconnect the clip that connects the wiring harness to the cap. That lets you work on things without standing on a ladder. There is a white and blue wire, had to cut the connection caps off and use wire nuts to connect the wires. Reconnect the bottom cap, and then you can screw in the bulbs and check to make sure things work. If they do, then install the glass lamp shade.

I'm just using the pull chain for the lights, I already had a wall switch for the fan. Works good, looks good, less the $50. Can't beat it.

I replaced all my white inside fans with nice fans with wood looking blades and lights for about the same price you can buy a light kit for the existing fans.
Also, in my new house, the red wire was always hot, not controlled by any switch, using this red wire you had to use a pull chain on the fan to turn the light on or off.
I had Galaxy Solutions putting in a dryer circuit and while they were already here, they charged me $20 per ceiling fan room to change the wiring in each switch to be able to use 1 switch for the fan and the other for the light. I did buy a new switch that combined a light on/off switch as well as a variable fan speed switch and galaxy changed the wires around in the switch box to make this work.
In the master bedroom, 1 of the switches controls an outlet that can be used for a light, and the other switch is for the fan. Here, I bought a fan with light kit that uses a remote to turn on and dim the light as well as turn on the fan and vary the speeds.
I installed all the fans myself which was easy to do.

Yes. We bought our universal light kits at Home Depot. Install was about 15 min per fan. Very easy!

Could you please share the cost of the dryer circuit from Galaxy?

Are you sure your current ceiling fan is worth investing money into? I wanted a light for my ceiling fan also, but after some thought, decided to get a whole new fan with a light kit built in. The fan I replaced was from 2014 and had started to develop some minor noises when it was running, which I suspected would probably get worse over time. I replaced it with a newer more contemporary looking fan by Minka Aire, (a model called MOJO) and a Minka wall control model WCS223. The wall control replaces the switch and uses radio waves to the new fan to allow me to dim the lights and control the speed on the fan. No extra wiring was needed. Bought fan on line for $200 and wall control for $75. This unit is beautiful and absolutely silent when it runs.

I would get the light kit even if you do not intend to use it day to day. It is probably the best location to light the room when you need it.

This will seem odd, but when we had our house built in TV we requested lights be installed in the fans and were told that wasn't an option. We were advised to buy light kits at lowes and install them ourselves, which is what we did.
All the fans had the capability for lights.
