A Reminder that we need to be careful out there...

Story in the Orlando Sentinel this morning. I don't think a common occurrence, but a golf ball hitting you in just the right place, can be deadly.

Man, that's a sad deal........

How sad for everyone involved. What are the chances? Some people say, when it is your time to go, it is your time to go. When you read things like this, it sure makes you think about that could be true.

the golf course I use to belong to in the northeast required and supplied workers to wear head gear for protection, they looked like baseball helments

Ajack 11-26-2010 10:20 AM

I would not want to wear those helmets 8 hours a day in this heat.

Helmets on a golf course? I'm amazed that Florida doesn't even require helmets when riding a motorcycle!

Think gary meant hard hat like at a construction site (something like baseball players wear) not helmets as in football/motorcycles, etc.

Reminds me of what happened to me in Guam. I was standing in a sand trap on the 9th hold green when I was hit just above the temple by an errant golf ball from the #1 tee box behind me. There were large bushes blocking my view of the tee box so I never saw it coming. Almost knocked me out. When I regained my senses I found that I was bleeding from a gash on the left side of my head. Lucky the ball partially hit the band of the hat I was wearing. Turned out that the "Lefty" who hit the ball was a doctor. He came over and stopped the bleeding. I stopped by the restroom at the club house and cleaned it up and finished the last 9 holes in 39. The wound was not painful that day but the next morning it hurt like the devil. Golf courses can be dangerous places. I never walk ahead of other golfers and try to keep my eye on players even in other fairways when they are near. Be careful out there.

A friend of mine was playing at Hacienda when a shot off of the tip of a club hit him in the left temple. He lost his left eye. A little higher or lower and he would probably be dead (his words).

NEVER NEVER stand in front of another golfer. Stand at his side.

I watch people walk all over the course while someone else is hitting a ball and wonder what they are thinking. I have had golfers stand in my line of trajectory when I am shooting out of a trap. I make them move before I shoot because you never know when you are going to blade one and send a line drive over the green.

With my group, I stand next to the flag. It's the only safe place to be.

I got hit too!

I got hit by a golf ball in my gut and it felt like I was hit by a bullet! The two holes were lined up side-by-side. I, too, got checked out by the doctor who hit me! He said to go to the ER if I had a bloody stool! No mention of paying the ER bill for me!!! Luckily it was in the fleshy part of my body and did not harm me, other than being sore. I did finish playing the course!

Watch out for bees in soda cans too.

An old college roommate of my father's was playing golf somewhere in Illinois and had a Coke or some other sugary soda with him.

A bee climbed into his soda while he had it set aside.

He picked it up not knowing about the bee and took a drink.

The bee went down his throat along with the soda and stung him.

He died from lack of air getting to his lungs. He was not allergic to bees; just got stung in a bad place.

Had a golfer hit into me once. My partner was hitting her ball and I was sitting in the golf cart. It is astonishing how lucky I was. The ball came within probably a millimeter of the side of my face and hit the golf cart dash so hard it left a huge gash. One millimeter further right and I probably would be dead.

Took a golf ball on the chin. Bloody and hurt but finished all 18. Not a good feeling for sure. Player was coming out of a Sand Trap. I am now very careful where I stand and where I am looking.
