Frost Delays
Sure with they would post frost delay information earlier....seems like it should be posted by 6:30 or so for early tee times. They should be able to do that based on weather conditions, temperature, et:cold:c.

Frost delays or other weather events for the golf courses are always posted at www.golfthevillages.com. It is available at 7am or shortly thereafter.
Here is the link for the frost delays today: http://www.golfthevillages.com/pdfData/sendPdf.pdf?pdfid={4FE292C7-B1AC-4A53-8C2C-F2A8818FCEEA} |
Yes, I know. We had reservations this morning at Tarpon Boil. We live about ten minutes from the course. I started calling the Starter Shack at 6:25 and finally someone answered at 6:45. There was nothing on golfthevillages either in the masthead or where weather events are normally posted. In fact, none of that information was available on line until well after 7:30 this morning...much too late for those with earlier tee times.
My point is that the technology exists to get information out earlier so those with the early tee times who might be driving several miles don't have to make the trek. The golf starters should be available earlier than 6:45 when calls can be made. |
Around here, I think one can almost determine for themselves if there will be a delay. This morning the temp on my lanai is 33. Seems if it's in the 30's, there's a delay. In all honesty, I'm not sure, no I'm positive, I don't want to play in 30 degree temps. Some here are more accustomed to playing in the cooler temps, but I'm not sure how well one can play in the cold. Some describe golf as a good walk interrupted...on cold days maybe just the walk part is enough.....:D

Friend of mine said that the greens keepers call in by 0630 to the pro shops who then relay the info to the t-time office by 6:45 to post it on golfthevillages.com and for broadcast on VNN. Have been told that if temps are below freezing even without frost, play will be canceled or delayed to protect the greens until temps are warmer. It all makes sense to me.
I was supposed to play this am (I know, not too smart) and thankfully my time was canceled. |
Not a greens keeper but to my understanding the reported temps don't need to be below freezing (temps as reported are usually taken 5-6 feet off the ground) to get frost or freeze conditions along the ground and in valleys.
My rule of thumb locally is if the reported temp is 37 or below I assume that there will be a delay. Of course I know what happens when you assume!:) |
At Mira Mesa, the radio said "mens day cancelled" for 7:45 & 9:15.
The golfthevillages website says "mens day cancelled likewise. The started CALLED me at 9:20 to say they were playing the 9:15 flight at 9:30. Anyone wanna bet I get points ?? |
I'll take the bet...........Found out no points today. Hope this helps

Suggest making weather delay start time coincide with closest tee time (i.e. instead of 9 am start time, make it the 8:59 tee time. On two different occasions we've been on the "cut" line - once we were given the option of starting on Hole #2 which was fine with us. Second time we asked about starting on hole #2 and were told the executive courses don't allow that. ????? Just a thought.........
