Eloctronic Pickpocket BEWARE

The following video was broadcast on WREG Ch. 3, Memphis.
It outlines a new type of electronic pickpocketing technique and it might be wise to check your credit cards after watching the video.

YIKES!!! Gonna have to start wearing lead-lined pants or something........:22yikes:

Looks like the detection equipment the guy was using has to be fairly close to the card for it to pick up the info.

Have no fear. Use a metal wallet, I do. Cigarette cases make good ones.

Your credit needs to be one that has the RFI chip implanted in the card. Look for the markings on your card that looks four C's from small to large. They cannot get your information off the old credit cards without swiping it.

Thanks for that. Now, in addition to the tin hat to keep our minds safe....http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...n_foil_hat.jpg

we'll need metal purses, http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r...rappermini.jpg to keep our credit safe! YIKES!!!

The October issue of The Villages Homeowners Association (VHA) newsletter, The Villages Voice, had a very good article from Seniors Vs Crime on this very subject. You can go to the VHA website to read this article by going to:
http://www.thevha.net/valuable-links-for-residents . You can also buy protectors for your cards and/or passport but I haven't found them locally, had to find them on the internet.

Pooh, you must have been transmitting some sort of telepathic message to me. LOL, that is exactly what I was thinking.

When we lived outside of DC, we ordered delivery from a place one night paying over the phone with a card. When the delivery person, a young woman in her early 20s arrived, she said she needed to make a copy of the card.

When asked for more details, she said she would simple take a pencil and piece of paper and do a pencil rub copy. I refused and she insisted. I told her to wait a minute and I called the business and was told, that yes indeed that is what they did. When I said, absolutely not, they said, well sign the receipt and say you refused verification. Weird. I don't use a card for delivery now.

Good move, bk - makes sense!

Nowadays, the technology and information exists that companies can verify name and billing address via a credit card number. Had the person simply asked you for a picture ID to legitimize the transaction, that would have been a logical request.

LOL....at least we'll be fashion coordinated.

Didn't think delivery people still had to make a copy of the card, but did need to see it. I don't blame you for refusing.

Snopes has an article on electronic pickpocketing that I found informative. Here's the link:

http://www.snopes.com/fraud/identity/pickpocket.asp

Apparently it's not as bad as it sounds, at least according to Snopes.
