The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to remain vigilant with the emergence of a new phone scam. The phone scam involves calls from someone — sometimes automated — claiming to be a deputy from the sheriff’s office. The scammer informs victims that to avoid arrest they must send money or gift cards.

Remember getting a call from a relative in Buffalo (not really the location) who said he needed money for a lawyer. And the person said he was Bill who actually lived in Buffalo. It was not his phone even though "Bill" said he was calling from a jail. But "Bill" sounded nothing like the real Bill. |
