Repainting My Driveway
 

I got an estimate to repaint my driveway. $4000. That seems high for a two car and golfcart driveway with no graphic, considering I just paid $3800 to have my entire house painted. Has anyone done it and what did it cost? Any recommendations? I'm in the dark and don't want to be taken advantage of.

Be sure they use an antislip additive (SharkGrip).

Getting multiple estimates should be standard procedure for almost any project at your house.

Without knowing the details, it sounds like the estimate includes grinding off the old finish which is typically required and almost doubles the cost of the project. IMHO, to get a quality finish, one that will last, the old finish needs to be completely removed. Be very cautious of any company that claims to be able to simply repaint over the old finish. I actually did this accidentally and 2 years later the new finish was failing due to the old finish failing.
Check exactly what the first estimate included.

We had ours done for $3100 recently. He didn't grind off the old finish but he did repair some spots that had started crumbling near the street and around one of the carport pillars. That section needed repair because we'd bumped into the pillar a few times when we were first learning how to maneuver the driveway in a golf cart.

Our driveway is double-wide, plus an open car port where we keep our two golf carts. So we have four vehicles on it all the time. Plus a small 5x5 square of concrete leading up to the wooden deck.

He power-washed, chipped off bits that the washer missed, repaired the crumbling, painted with some kind of epoxy-based paint, did another layer, added this sparkly stuff that gave it a granite finish, and then clear-coated the whole thing with another two layers. The sparkly stuff also makes it non-slip, which is a huge change from how it was before.

For another $400 I think he said, he'll come back every year and power wash and clear-coat it, to preserve all the work he did this year.

I haven't spent any money on my bare concrete driveway, and it still looks beautiful to me.

We used Harold who has a stall at Markets of Marion.
That was about 4-5 years ago and it still looks good.
He put a base layer down and then over painted in a multi coloured small dot pattern.
It cost us around $900 for that job. We were so impressed that we had him come back and paint right through the garage. He charged the same price.
He may look old but he knows his stuff and does a great job.
What really impressed was that he tested the concrete first to see if paint would adhere and last. He advises you before about any potential problems there might be. In our case he told us all was good.
His price may have gone up but I doubt it’s near the figure you quote. If you mail me, I can give you our address and you can drive by and have a look yourself.

EXACTLY! It’s a DRIVEway. I can think of MUCH better ways to part with my hard-earned $4000 than painting something my car sits on. I don’t get it?!?

$3800 is outrageously high to have a house painted. Recently had my house painted (base color plus two accent colors) for $1600.

Just keeping things shipshape. The finish that was there when we bought the house 6 years ago is starting to show wear.
