Gutter underground drain problem
 

12 yrs ago the gutter company installed this underground corrugated pipe. Now, the above ground portion has rotted. Can it be fixed by replacing just a foot or so of new material? If not, do I have to call the gutter company to replace the pipe? It goes under the concrete walkway, plus about 10 feet to the emitter.

Yes a temporary fix would be black Flex Seal Tape or Gorilla waterproof tape available Lowe’s, Home Depot or Amazon. Only the above ground part of pipe is deteriorated. The tape can be stretched and molded to to plastic pipe.

The big box stores have the drain pipe AND connectors (or splices) to connect new to old, all you need to do will be to dig out enough ground to get to solid pipe and splice away.

The damage does not look like deterioration from age. It looks like damage from a string trimmer. What ever you put in for a replacement I would purchase a small section of the same type pipe. Split it length wise then wrap it around the first foot or so of the pipe for additional protection.

If your current pipe goes under your sidewalk to a pop up emitter, I would not use this down spot extension. Grab a 3’ piece of corrugated tubing and a connector to fix the issue. 4-in x 4-in-Degree Corrugated Coupling Fittings Access Denied

Plastic does not rot. That is physical damage.

No question about it. That is damage from the use of the line trimmer.

I have lived in Florida for 30 years. Plastic, exposed to the elements, gets dry and brittle and then cracks. This is in a blind corner of the house, behind a bush, so no string trimming. But, I suppose that a ham-fisted landscaper might have hit it with a hedge trimmer blade. Anyway, the new piece is in place, so I'll keep watch from now on.
