I thought discussion of politics was not allowed!

I don't see that post as political at all. They said politics is one of the things you CAN discuss in a letter to the editor. It was just mentioned along with other subjects.

A letter to the editor is not a discussion. You don’t get to reply to them.. it is one person stating their opinion. The editors choose what they think are either interesting, funny, or otherwise of interest to their readers.
