Need some camera disk advice
 

Want to use my old camera. Threw away all my old memory cards. Went to Walmart & got a Scan Disk with an adapter. Message I get from camera (vintage 2008) when I put in this memory card is "card error." Need to have this working before Saturday. Any advice on how to proceed? Thanks--you guys never fail me.

Some older cameras would only accept low capacity memory cards. I would Google the camera model and download the owners manual. It should tell you what type of memory cards will work in the camera. You could also just try inserting a smaller capacity card, like a 4 GB.

Adaptor? Not sure why you need an adaptor….part of instructions with original camera ? Might need to format Card would be my guess. Camera from 2008……id recommend a new one. Might save issues in downloading photos and / or printing/sharing.

At 15 years old, electronics way out of date. New camera guaranteed to be better and easier to use.

I agree that the problem could be a format issue.

OP, check the owners manual to see what file system formats it will accept. Insert the card into a computer, go to Windows Explorer, right click on the card, and select "properties". It will show what "file system" the card uses, such as FAT32 or NTFS. The format could also relate to the card capacity. Large capacity cards usually have a different format than low capacity cards.

I would think that for the vast majority of us a cell phone camera works just fine.

First check that the mirco SD card is completely inserted into the SD card adapter, and in the correct orientation, I had one that of some reason allowed the micro SD card to be inserted backwards.

I think I still have some below 1 gig SD cards, so if you do not find another solution, let me know (send PM), and I can lend you a card or 2 I just need to make sure they are blank. I do not put contact info on open forums.

I just checked, and I have 512 meg to 2 gig SD cards, all empty and formatted. Let me know if you would like to borrow any of these.

You did format the new disk, right?

Two possible issues
 

Did you format the card? The card must be formatted either with the camera or your computer.

Secondly, the error could be the result of using an adapter. Adapters for are not always accepted by cameras.

Go to the camera maker's website, it will give the necessary requirements for memory cards as well as how to install them.

What model card reader did you buy at Walmart?
 

Besides the good recommendations of lower card size and formatting, I recommend that you format that card within the camera using the camera options.

I'm also thinking it could be lack of power getting to the card reader. If you're using a USB port, often the USB port provides insufficient power to a card reader and sometimes an auxiliary source of power is required. (also plugging it into AC)

Exactly what card reader did you buy? You said Scandisk, think you meant "Sandisk"? What model?

I never formatted an SD card. They have always come with a certain file system format. But, if the card uses a file system format that is incompatible with the camera, you need to either reformat the card to a compatible format or buy a different card. With the older cameras, some of them will not work with a large capacity SD card.

Please ensure you format the disc as well. Should be able to do in the menu of the camera. Good luck!!

I suggest you go to you tube and search your camera make + card error + scan disk. There’s usually an answer. You might have to change your search terms a couple times, but it’s likely someone has an answer for a 2008 digital camera
