Yeah! After a natural disaster, cars are mangled or destroyed by flood waters. If you ever have an opportunity, walk an area that has been struck by a hurricane, tornado, or flooding. The MASSIVE amount of cars destroyed will boggle your mind.

There is that, and much more. How about the likes of Dan Newlin and Morgan & Morgan, the large number of both very old drivers and tourists in rentals with screaming kids, dangerous cars on the road (no annual safety inspections), and partying vacationers such as spring breakers. It’s the perfect storm for insurers. We pay significantly less to insure 2 newer vehicles up north than our one late model Village’s garaged car, which we drive less miles per year than our golf carts.

Bingo! All very much a part of the soaring rates.

Another very large slice of that pie is the number of uninsured motorists infesting Florida roads. Florida ranks sixth in the nation at 20.4% per capita uninsured motorists, but that doesn't begin to tell the whole story. 20.4% in a state like, say, Idaho, where you can drive for an hour or more without meeting another vehicle, is negligible. 20.4 in Florida, where the geezers, 3rd country cowboys, and folks speeding because they're late for whatever, on roads that are often bumper-to-bumper in what seems like ever-shrinking spaces, is a whole 'nother story. A mishap with an uninsured motorist in, say, Boise, might mean a fender-bender. One in Miami, Jacksonville, etc. might easily result in a five-vehicle pile-up.

Those insurance guys aren't singling out The Sunshine State because they're after a quick killing (no pun intended). They're motivated by statistics and the bottom line. Florida's auto insurance rates are what they are because of the drivers inhabiting the roadways here, and the resultant expenses to the insurance companies incurred thereby.

Of course…. Just look at all the crazy drivers here in Florida.

Fortunately, most of us after we are retired can go down to one car and maybe a golf cart. Or two golf carts and rent a car/hire transportation when you need it.

Another thing to do, if you don't drive your car that much, is to check with your insurance company to see if they will reduce your premium if you don't drive that much. Not a huge amount, but why pay like you drive your car 15,000 miles a year when you don't go over 5,000?

Finally, increase your deductible. Most should be able to afford the first $1,000 of any damage/repair. Many people carry $250 or $500.

Add to that some TikTok challenge with instructions on how to disable theft systems and steal Hyundai's! Yay!! We have 2!! This is the story we got when we just got our latest bill with an increase. Our cars are not new and (we think) rates should be dropping as they age, but....no.

Florida is a large state. We moved from Pompano Beach, just north of Fort Lauderdale to the Villages in June. We got a refund on our auto insurance. Moving to the Villages has been a great financial move for us. Cheaper auto insurance, home insurance, property tax, gas prices, food prices, parking prices (can't park anywhere near the beach without feeding a meter). No complaints here!

Lest us not forget states that are just handing out licenses. Doubt they are handing out insurance to go along with the licenses. Where does one think those northern drivers will be driving to as snow birds? Crazy FLORIDA drivers?

FL does have one of the highest rates of uninsured motorist accidents... hmmm... why is that??

Buckle up and raise your uninsured motorist coverage cuz you are right, M n M is nationwide. 1990 they were a small family business in Orlando. So too was T V a small family business. Growth - a double edge sword.

It's the old, "Wish in one hand and spit in the other, which hand fills up first?" kinda thing.
