Flying Termites?

When we bought our (resale) home north of 466A three years ago we had Massey do the termite treatment, and the yearly follow up.

Today the Massey guy was doing our yearly inspection of the watering system and told us we were protected from the terrestrial termites, but not covered for the flying termites which is, of course, another treatment and another cost.

Turns out they couldn't do it anyway because we have foil "radiant barrier" in between the rafters.
I'm interested in how concerned my fellow TOTVers are about flying termites. According to his spiel it's becoming more of an issue with more and more digging up of the ground with the new developments etc etc.

Whatcha all think about this?

The typical termite treatment for new houses is to poison the soil under the house to prevent subterranean termites from taking residence under your house. If they come, they will never leave, but they mate every year and some will fly away and take residence in another house. In my opinion, these are the only type of termites you really need to be concerned about. There are other termites that can fly into your house and cause damage in your attic, but they are easier to detect than the subterranean termites. To protect your house, I would suggest maintaining a subterranean termite protection contract.

The dry wood termites that fly are not common here and do very little damage if they were to infest your attic. Save you cash.

There are 2 types of people who will answer your questions here. There are the "protect against everything and clutch the pearls until it happens" and the "that's a very small risk I'm willing to take". Not sure which answer you're looking for, but around here, there isn't much in between. Village tinker is probably the most informational poster you will come across, so listen to him!
