Repairing popcorn ceiling
 

My garage has a popcorn ceiling. Pieces of the coated wallboard have chipped off and some seams are opening. I'm sure this problem is the result of years of drastic temperature shifts in the garage. DIY repair is above my paygrade (and certainly inappropriate for my age). Any recommendations for a contractor/handyperson who's good at this? Thanks.

Apologies for hijacking the thread, but around nine square inches of my popcorn ceiling have fallen off (due to a leak by the solar tube). Not worth calling out the pros, but is there something I can buy to repair it myself?

You can try YouTube, but I have not seen a product for popcorn ceiling repair, I have seen products and tools for knockdown ceiling repair. Personally, for a popcorn ceiling I would go to a professional, and I tend to do all of my own repair work.

I had the same thing happen to me.
White flakes laying on my Toyota in the garage from a patch in the ceiling.
Went in the attic and moved a bundle of shingles that were to heavy
in the rafters pushing down on the garage ceiling.
Problem solved.

Hard to say without seeing it, but if you have some touchup paint for the ceiling, it couldn't hurt to try some of the spray popcorn you can buy in a can at Lowes, especially since it's just the garage. That stuff is actually pretty good.

Back in Texas, I had my attic water heater replaced one time, and they used a defective CPVC elbow that sprang a leak and sprayed the bathroom ceiling over the shower. I came in the next morning to find a giant bubble of water-filled paint hanging from the ceiling. It let loose as I was standing there in amazement, which caused the entire ceiling over the shower to fall down. What a mess!

The plumber refused to pay for anything but the elbow and I didn't want the hit to my insurance, so I fixed it myself. After I repaired the drywall, I used that spray-popcorn-in-a-can stuff to match the rest of the ceiling. After I repainted the ceiling, you couldn't even tell the difference.

Go to the Lowe’s app or web site and type “popcorn ceiling texture” and multiple products come up. I have used one of the spray ones with success in my Midwest home garage.

Interesting I have only seen 'orange peel' type textured spray, all of the popcorn ceilings I have seen have much larger bumps than what the sprays I have used. I will admit I have never researched this is detail as I have never had a popcorn ceiling.
