Attic Storage?

New Villager here. In the attic above the garage, there is plywood covering about the size of a car. It is the center of the attic above the garage (2 car plus cart). Are there limitations as to how much weight you should put up there?

I have not heard of anyone having a problem with weight in the attic storage. Just be reasonable.

More important is to consider the heat. It gets super-hot up there. Do not store anything that will be damaged by heat.

For example, not the artificial Christmas tree. Over several years ours faded and got brittle.
I would avoid storing plastics and textiles in the attic.

Others' experiences may differ.

I've heard it gets very hot up in the attic - you mention to not store plastic up there... so what is "safe" to store up there? Leather? Metal? Are Rubbermaid bins with tops okay to use up there? What about luggage?

Do you recommend getting the radiant heat barrier and extra insulation?

Thanks!

Maybe the handles on the luggage will get brittle if you put it up there. Better to keep them in the closets indoors.

It gets crazy hot in attics in Florida. Don't put anything up there that you really can't afford to lose. As long as you don't put really heavy things up there, you should be OK. If it's really heavy, not sure how you would get it up there in the first place.

I must be an outlier but I have just about anything I can get up there in my attic. Anything I would put in the garage for storage I would probably put in the attic with a few exceptions. I do not put golf clubs up there for fear the grips might get soft but I have seen many sets of golf clubs in attics in rentals here. I also have found the attic to be hot but not nearly as hot as I thought it would be. Goes without saying you to watch out for nails sticking through the roof.

I would definitely NOT put a car up there even if it fits.

Keep it low to floor of attic lot cooler at low point of attic. Cooler meaning few degrees less hot.

Should be Ok on weight as trusses should be 16 inches apart. People can walk on the plywood.

I have a remote temperature sensor 4ft above the deck that has never gotten more than seven degrees warmer than outside air.

The two of us added shelves in our closets above the original ones as a DIY. Adds lots of storage. Lowe’s or HD will cut them to the lengths you want.

I have stored my artificial tree and all my Christmas decorations in the attic for 9 years without a problem. My garage does have insulation.

We have the radiant heat barrier in our attic. We store everything with the exception of candles. We have lots of plastic up there including Rubbermaid bins. No problems in 15 years in this Florida summer heat.

We have no room in the closets to store luggage that looks like a luggage store. (see how I did that?) Our luggage has not suffered at all being stored in the attic.
