Shoulder specialist suggestions

I moved to TV last week. Nursing a rotator cuff tear and need a shoulder Doc - willing to travel for best care. Medicare supplement, can't use TVHS. TIA.

You can see any specialists in the Villages Health with traditional Medicare and a supplement. You can not have a PCP in The Villages Health. Sorry, I can't help with a shoulder specialist.

When I called TVHS I was told they did not accept traditional Medicare patients - accepted only Advantage plans. I'll call again and confirm. Thanks

Mike Moser at U of Florida/Shands in Gainsville. You can, by the way, see the non-PCP Drs in The Villages Health Care Specialty Centers with Medicare/Supplemental.

You may or may not be able to see a specialist with The Villages Health if your insurance is through Medicare. I was denied access to their Neurologists, told that the Neurologists have decided to limit their practice to their Advantage patients. On the other hand, their audiologists are available to me and my husband sees a urologist.

I've also heard that Dr. Wright with UF Gainesville is top notch. If you want to be closer to home, Isaac Mitchell of UF Health (not The Villages Health System) gets good reviews. My husband injured an already repaired shoulder and saw him. In that case, nothing needed to be done. It eventually healed, but he liked the doctor.

My rotator cuff is totally torn. I have no rotator cuff. I am scheduled for shoulder replacement with Dr. Wright, FOUR months out.

After a botched hip replacement locally, then hip revision at Shands last summer, I feel is is worth the wait to get the best.

Don’t trust Healthgrades

ConsumerAffairs.com shows an unfavorable rating of Healthgrades.com, listing allegations of inaccurate healthcare provider information, modified or falsified reviews left by consumers, and an inability to validate reviews properly before being posted.

Healthgrades does not include infection rates, readmission rates, serious safety or never events (like leaving an instrument in a surgical site) or mortality rates.

I could care less if some doc has a pleasant bedside manner or an efficient office. I want some one who can fix me without further injury.

I would never go to Dr Cook!! He told me I had 3 issues and def needed immediate shoulder surgery or within 6 months my problem would get so bad that it would become a major surgery with a huge rip. Thankfully I got a second opinion. Turns out my small pain was a temporary injury and no surgery needed! That was 7 years ago. I felt fine after one injection! I would never go to Dr Cook again after he tried to pressure me into unnecessary major surgery!!!

I had Dr. Billings at The Orthopedic Institute. LOVED him and my shoulder is in great shape after the surgery. Good luck!

Advanced Orthopedics near Lady Lake. Dr. Alfred Cook did mine (major job) and is well known/respected/recommended. I got many recommendations for him and many came from other physicians, including the MRI folks and my general prac at the time who had her's done by him.
