Dust in house
 

We spent 3 weeks in our house in TV before returning to NY. We don't know what to expect when we return. When we left, the house was clean. With three months of non-use- will we return to a dust bowl and need to spend the next week cleaning and dusting?

If your in an area of new construction yes. I have a rental home in Poinciana about 3 homes away from Baily Trail. When they were building all those homes across Baily Trail, every time I came down the house was very dusty and the lanai I had to hose down and wash the dust away.

Tom forget about the golf cacrt buy a bulldozer, When we moved dowm we were surrounded by empty lots. Oh my god talk about dust and we lived here. The lanai was like a sand box not to mention the sand coated sod. Glad it's over and love the place all the more. On a plus side I DIDN'T HAVE TO SHOVEL THE SAND!!!! Unlike the white s--t up North during Christmas.

Not so much for us. Our home is in a new area by Odell Rec. Center and the only thing that was disgusting when we returned after being gone over the summer was the lanai with what was probably some mold. Had the house power-washed and it was good as new. Inside the dust is never a problem! Would say there's way less of that and track-in stuff than we EVER had up north. As stated here...suppose it depends where you're located (within construction areas etc.)

There was no construction in the immediate area but there is some on the next block (maybe 100 yards away.) I'm not too worried about the lanai. I was asking more about the interior. You know, the dishes, pantry, bed coverings, furniture. Hope to catch up with you, , Skip, next month.

Nope...not a problem at all!!! Hard surfaces had dust of course but not thick as one might think. If you're concerned with furniture then purchase inexpensive sheets and use them as dust covers. We didn't seem to have to do this though.

Tom No problems at all inside, A couple of empty can, bottles and glasses but thatwas due to the parties, hurry down. Nice weather is a comin.

100 yards away is still close enough to leave a lot of dust, but not as much as you'd expect -- figure a moderate amount. If the cupboards were kept closed, they won't be a problem. I've found there's usually a lot of dust on the toilets, more so there than anywhere else in the house (who knew porcelain was such a dust magnet?).

Cheap sheets work well to protect the upholstery. You can either hire someone to clean before you get back or plan to spend about 2 hours (with both of you working) to clean up all the dust.

we are in the historic district and always return to find dust on counters, tables, etc. we cover the furniture with cheap sheets - pull them off and toss in the washer. toughest part of cleaning is the slats on the blinds - i hate those! :yuck:

I think it's dustier here than in our 60 yr old Ohio house. We bought an upgrade to the furnace (gas) filter and maybe it makes a difference.

Second thought though - it might be the bright sun that makes everything look dustier. As I recall, on sunny days in Ohio I always noticed that everything needed dusting.

So - maybe there is something good about cloudy days up north :)

This interests me because, when I come back to TV after a month or so absence, it surprises me how little dust there is in the house. (The lanai, of course, is a different story.) We get much more at our home in Atlanta. I haven't figured out why that is.

I am also expecting LOTS of dust after we return next week after 4 weeks. Each day I find an unusual amount of dust in my TV home compared to my home in Michigan.

Does everyone find a dust problem?

There are a few reasons for dust being more noticeable here than other places, construction, lack of rain and living in an area with a heavy traffic pattern.

Since there are periods when we do not have much rain, everything is drier than usual and with the wind the dirt blows around.

When you live near new constuction, that creates lots of dust too. Otherwise after the area is developed there is less dirt in the air.

Yesterday we were at the new 18 hole executive course, Yankee Clipper.
It was very windy and the construction dirt was really flying!

Also, when the weather is warm, we open windows and go in and out of our homes more. Up north, some days when it's cold, you just stay inside and never open doors.

I don't get a whole lot of dust in my house...but of course Tom, maybe it is all being blocked by your house ;)
