For those of you that have started a club/group

I started a club and got a room to use in a recreation center for speakers etc and was filling out the paper work and geeze you are signing your life away!! You are held liable for someone getting hurt , damages etc.. it was extremely one sided.. I was just curious what people that have formed clubs/groups what they thought about the "permit" that you have to sign, were you able to change the writing in it? Thanks

I doubt you'll be able to change the contract…

You pass liability downstream by having members of the group sign a waiver, essentially accepting those same risks and responsibilities. You could use the activity waiver (available on the CDD site) or reference the waiver for the woodshop. In some cases it's sufficient to post or provide the group by-laws and active participation is acceptance but getting a signed release is always best.

I have been through that in the past. Just my personal decision, but I decided once I was no longer involved I would never do it again. Perhaps most people who come to look over the villages realize this, but when we first took the tours and listened to the representative, it was definitely NOT made clear that the many lessons, activities, etc. depended ONLY on the generosity of the residents. We were simply shown art lessons, photography, dance, ceramics, etc. and told "these are only a very small sample of what you can chose from here." No deception but, also had no idea that if residents did not donate their time and talent, we would not have all these, so felt it only fair that I do my share. But, as a resident I finally realized the enormous legal burden I was willingly accepting, and, that no matter what quality of attorney I could afford, he/she could never be successful over the plethora of attorneys of the villages. Each has to make their own decision of course, I no long sign any of those papers required, but most don't worry about it at all, so ?
