Preserve sites and mosquitos
 

My wife and I are looking at buying a lot in the Eastport area soon. I was wondering if anyone knows for a fact if mosquitos are more of an issue in a Preserve site vs any other type of site? I have heard that TV does spray for mosquitos and I'm hoping that maybe due to their spraying, the mosquitos are controlled at the preserve sites as well as the other types of sites.

We've lived on a preserve lot for three years now. We really haven't experienced an issue with mosquitos. As you mentioned, the county does a good job of spraying and will spray when called even if not on their regular schedule. We have had an issue with wild pigs though. They have since moved on or died. We experience a lot of birds, which we love except when they carpet bomb our birdcage :1rotfl: .

One downside is we seem to get a lot more pollen than interior lots. But for us it's worth the tradeoff to be able to be so close to nature and not have anyone behind us.

We back to a preserve that is dry behind us in the middle. There is definitely low water and cattails, farther out. Yes they do spray for mosquitoes however that’s done from the road so it affects nothing in the preserves.
We used to live across from a pond and had less mosquitoes than we do now, but since we stay in the birdcage, it’s not an issue. We just don’t go outside after dark in backyard.

However it is very true if you put in a pool, have the preserve behind you, definitely have 100% more pollen due to the trees. You do get a fair amount of wildlife , most of our birds are flying over the preserve, not our house, so bonus

There are mosquitos everywhere even when spraying but you’ll have more around water. Thankfully they put a screened lanai so you can sit outside bug free.

I’m on a preserve site in Lake Denham. Outside my screened lanai there are plenty of skeeters and no seeums along with other stingy things. But inside the screen it’s not an issue. I have looked at Eastport areas and I have not seen any preserve sites. That’s why we chose our Lake Denhamoy. It’s all pretty flat with retention ponds and a he only trees seem to be on the golf courses in Eastport area villages. But if there is water there will be mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes are an issue near preserves, lakes & other natural areas. I live across from a large retention pond & to my astonishment there are no mosquitoes. The man made retention ponds have some sort of mosquito inhibitor, I don't know which ones but maybe something like the discs that get tossed into the water & then kill off the larvae. On the natural areas, this is not allowed. There are remediations like others have mentioned, stay inside the screens, go indoors before sundown.

Where are the preserve lots in Eastport?

AFAIK, that's former pasture land/sod farms. All the ponds in that area are man made. Most have bubblers and attract wildlife that helps control insects.

We only see mosquitoes at dusk.

We have been living with a preserve in our back yard for nine years. No problem except during sunrise and sunset. Never a problem in the birdcage during those times, only if working around the yard. Compared to the nasty ticks, horse and deer flies up north, the mosquitoes in the Villages are practically a non event.

I will add the mosquitoes bite seems to depend on the person, my wife gets eaten alive while I rarely attract any, so if you are like my wife near any water might not be a good idea.

Same here. I can't remember the last time I had a mosquito bite.

My wife, otoh, is like a cruise ship buffet to those blood suckers...

Preserve sites have to pay a premium, however there is no upcharge for the extra mosquitos that may come with it.

florida is one big Swamp ... You live in an area that is called the "'wet prairie ".
You will always have skeeters.. The chemicals they spray are not especially good for your lungs... if you have any DDT now's the time to use it.

Early morning and evening they will eat you alive. Spraying has done little.
