Kindle Fire HD 10
 

Anyone here have a Kindle Fire Tablet and rent eBook's from the Sumter County Library? I've been using a Kindle Paperwhite for years and as we all know the Library stopped using Amazon.

The Kindle Fire is like an Android tablet, and you can rent books on it from the Sumter County library. However, the file format will not be the same as on a Kindle Ereader. You cannot download a library ebook to your Kindle Paperwhite from Sumter County.

Note that in the past, you could download Kindle books to your Paperwhite from the Lake County library using the Libby app. But they have recently switched to the Cloudlibrary app, which is not compatible with Kindle books.

I have borrowed books and read them on my HD8. I assume the 10 will work too but I won’t be able to confirm that for a few days.

You need the app for reading the books (not Kindle) but it should be easy to find on the library website.

I know the Kindle Paperwhite don't work with the Sumter Co library. I am considering getting a Kindle Fire to use with Sumter Co and I want to hear for others that use the Fire Tablet and how is it for reading books?

The HD8 fits my hands better than the HD10 (I have both). The 10 has more screen real estate which allows a larger font to be used. I know the app runs on the 8 but I haven’t tested it on the 10.

I have several Kindle Fire tablets and they work fine for reading library books. But, any tablet will also work. I prefer to use a Samsung tablet for everything I do. The Paperwhite is an Ereader, not an Internet tablet, so it requires a special Kindle file to read books. You don't need to buy a Kindle Fire to read books.

If you have used a kindle paperwhite in the past how would you rate The Kindle Fire for just reading books compared to a paperwhite?

Retired guy, I know all this.

Nothing beats the paperwhite. The paperwhite battery lasts longer, it is much lighter, and the brighter the sun the easier it is to read.

On the other hand, other than in bright sun the Fire is very easy to read. I use the tablet for much more than reading ebooks and the Fire supports that while the paperwhite does not. But in this case, perhaps the best or only determining factor is the Fire’s ability to run the app necessary for borrowing Sumter County books.

If I only read books from our library I would get the Fire and feel very happy with my choice. If I also had access to Kindle books and did a lot of reading in the sun then I would buy both even though that would mean carrying two devices (my wife’s preference).

Thanks. I read every night in bed for a while so sunlight won't affect the Fire. That's all I would use it for. I'm just tired of paying Amazon when I can get books for free from the Library. I do believe my tax dollars help pay for the Sumter Library. I take it the 8" would be easier to hold.

I’ve downloaded books from the Sumter County Library to my iPad for years using their app, Boundless. Rarely have any problems.

You can use any fire tablet to checkout books. The app is boundless and if your kindle has the ability to run this app it will work on it also.

Another app unique to Sumter County is "Library2go", which gives you access to the Boundless and Hoopla apps. Hoopla will allow you to borrow media, like audiobooks, movies, and other items.
