Discount on auto insurance
I read this in the Recreation News:
"Any insurance company doing business in Florida must give an auto discount to those who complete the two-day AARP Safe Driving Course. Contact your agent for discount amounts. Classes are open to those age 50 and older. Course fee is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers." I'm not in FLA yet, so I wondering if this is worth the money and time. If you have taken the course, how big of a discount on your auto policy did you receive? |
In CT
I don't know how it works in FL but in CT.
AAA Driver's Safety Course is free to it's members and I believe it's a 10% discount that is good for three years. Well worth going to. |

I took the AARP course this year in Florida. According to the instructor , Florida differs from other states because Florida mandates that companies give a discount but does not specify the amount of the discount. While some companies give 10% for 3 years, the instructor stated that some companies may give a smaller discount. Check with your insurance carrier.
In any case, I thought the course was worth the time and money even without the discount. They give some driving tips for older drivers and they point out Florida specific laws that may not exist in other states. |
I'm planning on taking it - probably in Feb. My ins. co. said it would be a $14.00 something discount for each 6 mo. policy premium (for me, as I'm listed as the primary driver in FL). We have a car in OH, and they said it wouldn't be any discount for Ohioboy to also take it. So - ours will pay for itself in about 5 mos.
But - I think it's a 6 hour course (3 hours on each of 2 days), not a 16 hour course. Can anyone confirm? |
