Lay Of The Land

My wife and I are closing on a home in The Villages in mid August so needless to say we have a lot to learn.
My question is, Are there any restricted roads in The Villages property where you are not allowed to drive a golf car?

You’re pretty much not allowed on any road that has a speed limit over 20mph unless it has a dedicated cart lane. Most of the major roads will have a multimodal path that runs parallel to it where the carts can travel.

The "Historic Section" doesn't have cart lanes and the speed limit in most of it is 25mph.

More accurately -

If the speed limit is 30 or less, you can drive your golf cart on it. However if the road has a golf cart lane you have to stay in it except to turn left or to pass a slower vehicle.

When you get here, there is a golf cart safety course, I believe it is held at least monthly and is very useful for new residents, by the way, Welcome to The Villages.

This should be helpful.

When you get here it's pretty obvious where you should and shouldn't go. You may get out of bounds on occasion but if you watch the signs you will be fine. As village tinker recommend the course is very good. You will spend the most time close to home at first and venture out from there. You won't find yourself on the fringes often unless you seek them out.

BTW, villagetinker's advice has always been top notch, follow his recommendations without fear of being mislead.

Thank You to all of you for your assistance.

It's the best. You will be shocked just how positive and eager to help everyone is. The personalities you encounter online aren't representative of the people you will meet in your daily interactions.

When we came for our ‘looking around’ trip last July, my husband and I were tooling along in the golf cart when all of sudden we were accosted by a person telling us in no uncertain terms, “Get off the cart path if you’re not golfing”. We were shocked because we weren’t trying to be on it!

We realized later if the path is asphalt that’s good; if it’s cement it’s not. Lesson learned.

Some of these golfers are cranky, it's because their game is so bad. Just smile and say get lost shankapotomus, if you can knock their ball further in the rough as you say it.

Great piece of advice there, I’ll sure remember that one!

Golf carts are not allowed on roads with speed limits over 30mph. This means 44, 466A, 466, Buena Vista, most of Morse, and several roads south of 44 are off limits. You cannot even cross these roads on a golf cart.

Fortunately, any road you cannot travel on has a MMP next to it and any road you cannot cross has a tunnel or a bridge for golf carts.

I do not know anyplace within the Villages that you cannot reach on a golf cart. Similarly, there are very few places outside the Villages that are reachable by golf cart.

Well, kind of…. there are plenty of cart lanes that end and you have to merge into the road for a bit until another comes up. There will always be a sign that says carts not allowed past this point if it’s a major road you’re not allowed on. There are 2 apps with GPS for golf carts that are very helpful

golf cart safety clinic....given every month at Colony Cottage Rec Center. It's free and every villager should attend to get the correct and true answers to your questions. It could very well save your life and the lives of your loved ones. In August it will be 9am Aug 21. In Sept it will be Sept 18 and every month after the 3rd Wed. at 9am.
