What's the Deal With Outpatient Surgeries?

A friend of mine was supposed to have outpatient surgery at 3:00pm today. She has been waiting a couple of hours and just found out that the surgeon is only on surgery #2 and she is surgery #6!! So they sent her home and are rescheduling her surgery! Is this a common occurrence in the area. We are talking about Leesburg Medical Center in this case.

stuff happens

Haven't encountered that. We schedule medical things early in the day. As Bogie said, sometimes stuff just happens. It's frustrating to be prepared and then find out, it's a no go. Hope all works out better the next time.

time outs

every surgery has to have what theycall time outs. This is supposed toa be done on every case. It involves identifying pt, surgery, ,site, left or right, everybody prepared with meds, equipment, instruments, counting etc. This is supposed to prevent the 13 % of sentinel events including deaths. Remember that with sll the technological advances there is that much more to check. Even such a thing as room temp can delay a procedure. all in all chances are they ran into unexpected findins in Surgery, vey unfortunate things.

stuff like that happens. It happened to me, no food since midnight, got there at 1 PM, was told things were backed up, I'd be in by 3 PM. About 2:50 they came out and said that I was last in line, six ahead of me, did I want to reschedule? Yes, I said.....who wants to be the last patient of what was going to be a long day in surgery ? As I found out later the surgeon had a flat tire to add to his problems that day. This all happened in Tampa. I was happy they gave me the choice. They scheduled me for 7 AM thefollowing week.

I would never agree to schedule a surgery in the afternoon, outpatient or not.
