Dead Fish at Spanish Springs
 

My daughter & I walked around the body of water at Spanish Springs closest to Rt 441 today. We were shocked to see hundreds of dead catfish on the shore all the way around. They were all about a foot long and had been eaten by the birds. They look like they've been dead awhile. Does anyone know why they died? Someone surmised it was because those fish burrow into the mud and the water level has dropped significantly leaving them in drydock. Another theory was that the PH factor of the water is all screwed up because of bird & duck dung. Anyone know the truth?

At least they didn't fall out of the sky!

We've seen this happen with fish (not catfish, though) a couple of times at a local lake here in OH. Purportedly, it's due to a drop in the level of oxygen in the water. Has happened during hot dry times in the summer. Gets pretty nasty!!

Could be a warning sign that too much insecticide is being used on lawns.

there are some stocked fishes in the ponds that are not able to cope with some of the freezing weather we have had.

mabe someone put some dogfish in to scare the cat fish!:doggie:

That happened a few years ago to the pond in Alhambra. The cause was chemicals. Someone put the wrong mixture or amount into the pond to control algee and it killed all the fish. Sure was a mess for a few days.

Could also be from a sustained cold spell, if there was one there during the last couple of months. That lake is so shallow, maybe they couldn't get deep enough or closer to the thermocline to get the proper oxygen. Just a guess.:undecided:
