1895 street scene created in Chicago basement

My brother-in-law sent this to me in an email and I thought it so cool I wanted to share it.

This guy spent 30 years recreating a main street from 1895 in his basement and his craftsmanship is simply astonishing. He has a lot of skill and must have immense patience.

I've never seen the TV show it came from, Incredible Basements, hosted by a young Mike Rowe of Dirty Jobs fame. I don't think it aired in the NYC area.

Hope you like it as much as I did.

As a kid on the Chicago South Side I went to the Museum of Science and Industry many many times. The old time main street is one of the best places there. It has a Nickelodean Theater that showed silent pictures. I was there the day they brought the captured German Sub U505 to the museum (maybe in 1955?). Loved to watch baby chick born. The coal mine elevator and train ride in the dark is great. WWII fighter planes hanging from the ceiling. An amazing place!

This brings back great memories - thanks Richie!

That was amazing! What a project. I bet he enjoyed the research as much as he did the actual construction of it. The end result is so fascinating. Thank you for sharing!

Wow - Beyond amazing. Just the research alone must of taken countless hours and the talent to do this is incredible. What an amazing concept. Hats off to John Scapes.

This would make a great tourists attraction. I know I would be fascinated by the amount of detailed work, the products being sold and their amounts charged that this man was able to replicate. I could listen to this man's knowledge of that time for hours.

It's not only patience but talent and a labor of love.
