MVP opener troubleshooting

I have an MVP garage door opener that has suddenly developed a problem of when you need to open or close it. You must hold the button down the garage to get it to go either way if you let off the button, the opener stops. The remotes do not work at all. Any idea of how to fix this problem on my own? The lock and unlock button on the pad inside the garage is in the unlock position..

First, look at the back of the opener, there are RED and GREEN LED lights, you will probably see one or both flashing, fast or slow. The instruction manual (available online) has a page that decodes these lights. I have helped several neighbors and one of the major problems is the twisted and taped connections at the sensors. These tend to corrode, and this looks like the beam is broken which causes the opener to not operate correctly. I cut out the old connections and use crimp splices with liquid tape to repair and seal these.
