with their full gas tanks. I came across families coming from Tampa trying to get gas on their evacuation routes off of I-75 at 44. Some were crying, because they couldn't find gas. Meanwhile, villagers who are NOT evacuating were sucking up the gas so fast that most of the stations were out by 7 am. I know this because I was in search of propane. I have 70 miles until empty but I wasn't trying to buy gas. It hurt me to the core to see these families who are trying to reach their destination but they can't. I have also watched Villagers topping off a half full car just because they are selfish hoarders who apparently fall into the "entitled villagers" category because "they can". I literally asked one at a gas station why they were filling up if they aren't leaving, the response, "because I can".
This disappoints me. Be BETTER than that!
I know that everyone on this board is perfect and not a soul will admit to doing it, but I know who you are. I hope you are happy keeping people from getting to safety.

Perhaps one should lobby to change the PSAs going out that strongly suggest folks do exactly what you seem to detest.

A bit harsh. Many Villagers are older and more vulnerable and not as resilient as the young families. I remember when I had a young family; kids 4 and 10 years old, husband in an old Chrysler wagon (which needed repair) with two dogs, one cat and we were facing a “real” hurricane at Cape Hatteras in N Carolina. We were told to evacuate but before we could go husband got someone to fix the car - in 20 minutes - then packed us up and we joined the people in the packed line on the one road from the Outer Banks - drove 250 miles inland - safe and sound to Raleigh. The young can be very resilient when needed.

When someone can give me a logical explanation as to why you need to go to the gas station and top off a half tank of gas when you aren't leaving, I'm all ears! Don't tell me that you have a Dr. appt on friday that you need to get to that requires you to top off a half tank of gas.

I don't even see how this is relevant to what I posted. Old people are resistant to common sense? So you evacuated on a packed road and made it safely to your destination? I'm missing your point. If people are that old and vulnerable, they shouldn't be driving. Maybe reread my post, I'm referring to people who are NOT evacuating.

Well, for one, we have a generator that could use the fuel from the car. It is easier to store gasoline in the tank of a car and cart rather than in 5 gallon containers.

So THAT is the point your were trying to make with the rambling story of your childhood? Ok then. I think I saw you at the gas station.
Is it easier when you're syphoning that gas from your car to the generator? I'd like to watch that.

How do you get the fuel out of the car's tank and into the generator, is there no anti-siphon device in the line?

Simply pouring fuel from a 5 gal container into the generator seems easier than siphoning into something and then pouring.

Some of us fill up and are prepared for anything and some of us are into "Virtue Signaling". To each their own.

It doesn't feel like virtual signaling to lament that there is no fuel available for those that need it because those that don't have hoarded it.

How do you know the ALL the people who were getting gas were "topping off", except the one person you asked? How do you know they were Villagers, except the one person you asked? How do you know that even if they were "just topping off" and were truly Villages, they were not preparing to relocate out of the storms path, except the one person you asked ? Seems like a lot of assumptions and judgements being made. (PS Were you going to fill your propane tank or just get a rationed amount to leave some for the other entitled villagers? Asking for a friend.)

I grew up in Florida. Every hurricane season one of the things we’ve always been told is to fill the gas tank on your car, buy water, fill bathtubs with water etc. Something ever year for the past 74 years. The problem is the number of people who now live along the Florida coast. There is no way gas stations can store the amount of gas needed to fill every tank in The Villages, in one or two days. After the storm there may not be power. No power, no gas! If you have to leave the area because it isn’t safe, how do you get gas? You fill the tank ahead of time. The same thing happens at food stores? People but what they don’t need. What about hotel rooms? Those run out also. Why do you think they tell you to prepare early? We didn’t just learn about this storm today. Plan ahead.
