If u do a swap at home depot, how do u insure that the tank u get is in as good shape as the one u turn in?

In NJ the Home Depot and other exchange depots did not give you a full tank. I'm guessing it's the same here. Blue Rhino and AmeriGas ,which are the most common tank exchangers, each fill their tanks with 15 lbs of propane in the 20 gallon tank when the tanks can be filed with 17 to 18lbs., and usually at a higher cost than the tank refill depots charge for 17 lbs or 18lbs.

I haven't purchased a gas grill as of yet, but when you exchange your tank look for how many pounds of propane you're getting for your money. They post it for legal reasons.

I recently read that the propane tanks are only supposed to be filled to 80% of capacity to allow for expansion. A 20 LB tank would only have 16 LBS when full.

I have made exchanges with Lowe's and Walgreen's and the tanks are always in great shape. Probably better than the ones I turn in. I would think that they would have to inspect them and make sure they are rust free and not leaking before they could sell / trade them with the public.

Gas in a pressurized tank will not be expanding.

getdul81- There are 3 variables which which will determine the amount of pressure a gas will exert in a closed container:the size of the container, the temperature of the gas, and the amount of the gas in the container. If the size of the container is decreased, the pressure of the gas will increase in inverse proportion to the change in size. This is the reason for not filling the container completely. WE intended to go to Parrot RV Park for propane but they are having a craft fair today and they recommended Ace Hardware (mile and half down 25) go to stop light and it is on the left....They charge by the pound (83 cents), our tank still had 6 pounds, so filled tank for $11...

Thanks everyone for the information, it is quit helpful. One place that no one mentioned was Sam's Club. Do they fill tanks? I like the ACE Hardware store in Wildwood, it is close to me, I probably will use it.

the containers are available 24/7 at home depot. you just exchange outside the building any time day or night. pretty cool !
