2020 Yamaha golf carts, lack of brake lights
I recently had a discussion with a friend that I had offered some help on a cart with no brake lights. After following my advice, he found the spring that controls the brake lights had failed. It broke at the end (I believe) away from the switch. Then after fixing his cart, he noticed a neighbor with the same problem, and THE EXACT SAME FAILURE.
Keep an eye on your brake lights and the possible failure of the spring. NOTE: my friend was not able to buy just a spring but had to buy a 'repair kit' at a cost of around $90. |
Ace Hardware is supposed to have a selection of springs. What made the brake spring special?

Mine broke last year, nobody would sell just the spring. I used a car brake spring. Same size, works perfectly.

Can someone please add a picture or detailed description of the spring or location of the spring?

The spring is located under the floor plate directly under the gas and brake pedals, to connects the brake switch to the brake pedal. The spring needs to be strong enough to operate the brake switch, and long enough to connect the 2 items. These MAY be available from the online golf cart parts companies.

My 2019 Yamaha had the brake lights go out. I had Willy’s do annual maintenance and fix the brake lights. There is an adjustable bracket that needed adjusting. He adjusted it and didn’t change extra. I’ll stick with Willy’s and recommend them.

The box is the timer relay. Spring inside blue circle. |
A spring is a spring. If you can remove the spring, bring it to any well stocked auto parts OR hardware store and match it up. Even Home Depot or Lowe’s. The spring most likely broke at the sharp 90 degree bend where the metal was stressed the most during manufacturing, it happens. Keep it simple usually works best.

Every place I looked, they wanted to sell the spring and the switch... Nobody would sell just the spring.

Ironically, recently a friend asked my husband to help him figure out why his 2019 Yamaha golf cart’s brake lights weren’t working. When my husband backed our 2020 Yamaha cart out of the garage, they discovered that his brake lights also weren’t working!
Both carts had a broken spring like The Village Tinker described. Rather than purchase the entire unit, they straightened out the end of the broken spring and reattached it. Problem solved! Be sure to periodically check to be sure your brake lights are working. |
