Rock salt ? crystals/pellets found on my sidewalk and landscaping behind my gate.

Yesterday Wed 12/4, I went to let my dog out and found what looks like rock salt crystals/pellets all over my side yard and cement. Evidently thrown there over my gate as it is only in that area, not in the back and is in junks although most is rather small. If left on the cement, of course, it would in time destroy the cement. I live in Soulliere CYV. Anyone else have this problem or know of this as a tactic for....., and maybe see anyone wandering thru different villages up to mischief? Not off the roof either as it is only in an area that could be reached from gate. Grrrr. Thanks for ideas, info, etc. Now to get out the leaf blower and hose the cement down....another thing on the "to do" list.

Could it have been accidentally spilled by someone bringing a bag of salt to add to a saltwater pool or a water softening system?

Maybe someone was trying to melt frost off a sidewalk LOL

Only super fine salt is used for saltwater pools, so My guess someone was delivering for water softener and dropped the bag. Happened at friends house, delivery guy dropped their salt bag on painted driveway while they were gone. Definitely damaged to drive.

Do you have pool or water softener and do you have pool/ softener service? If so that answers you’re question.

ElDiabloJoe 12-05-2024 03:06 PM

Are you certain it is not fertilizer pellets from a spreader?

Desiderata 12-06-2024 06:55 AM

My guess would be that someone carrying salt for a water softener dropped a bag of salt. Possibly a delivery service that accidentally went into the wrong yard, which is very easy to do in CYV.

rock salt & filler for water systems look very much alike.

Be careful your dog doesn’t ingest them. Also clean the area & wash it down, the salt may hurt the dogs paws.

Don’t blow or wash it into your lawn or landscaping - sweep it up. The salt will damage your grass and/or bushes.

Clean it up with a Shop-Vac so you don't spread it around and don't know what it is. I wouldn't get too paranoid unless it happens again.

Thanks for all your replies and ideas...... no one around here has a pool and no one has water conditioner around here where they need to go thru anyone's backyard. I was able to sweep it up, then use a leaf blower to get any small bits into an area and remove it as best I could. Then hosed the whole area into a small area where I have just gravel filling a hole which acts like a french drain would act. Best for each of us to have knowledge of what is going on around us. Take care and thanks again. Enjoy your upcoming holiday.

This.

Fertilizer pellets look exactly like ice melt.
