Can exterior shutters be painted?

Our home is eight years old, and our "Spanish Moss" shutters are badly faded. Can they be painted, and if so, what kind of paint should be used?

You can paint them. I used Rustoleum spray. There is one with paint and primer combined but I would ask at the paint department desk which one would work best.

After you get ARC approval, if you're changing color.

I triple verified that no ARC approval required to change door or shutter color. Just don't go neon!!!

I went from red to white on the door and red to white on the shutter with a new palm tree cutout designed shutter.

No need for ARC approval if you stay with a color thats at least close to what you have. I did mine about 6 months ago. Wash them off and use any good exterior paint. Mine look like new now.

I would carefully clean the shutters with TSP or similar, and then use a spray paint specifically for vinyl and apply 2 coats. I cannot comment on ARC requirements as these can be dependent on where you live. I would contact and get approval (if necessary).
Also, use painters tape and number the shutters and indicate TOP so you get each one back to the same location as these can easily have the mounting screws in slightly different locations.
