Lithium batteries will go up now!

Canada is a major supplier of lithium for golf cart batteries. Maybe choosing a gas cart is a better option now?

ohioshooter 03-05-2025 08:29 PM

Hmm, just consider the source. It’s just beginning.

CarlR33 03-05-2025 09:12 PM

I am going to buy a warehouse full of them before the price increase. You may want to do the same with the gas ones?

Will it matter? Batteries for cars will probably not increase as previous predictions.

Source? Canada isn't in the top 5 of lithium producing countries. According to Dept of Energy, bewteen 2016 and 2019, the US got over 90% of it's lithium for production from Argentina and Chile.
FOTW #1225, February 14, 2022: From 2016-2019, over 90% of U.S. Lithium Imports Came from Argentina and Chile | Department of Energy.

As of 2023, 94% of lithium still came from those two countries. chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://pubs.usgs.gov/periodicals/mcs2024/mcs2024-lithium.pdf (I imagine Canada MAY be part of the 'other' at 1%.)

Comments above are not intended to be a defense of battery golf cars, or a discussion of golf cars in general for that matter (I have gas golf car). I just want to point out that the OP is based on a false premise. I will retract if documentation can be provided that indicates the less than 1% of Canadian lithium is used specifically for golf car batteries.

China is the undisputed leader in battery manufacturing, dominating the global production of essential battery materials such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Chinese companies supply 80% of the world’s battery cells and control nearly 60% of the EV battery market.

I purchased a new lithium phosphate battery for my trolling motor 3 weeks ago even though I don't need it until June. Guess who manufactured it.

What about your car or golf cart battery? Checked those prices out lately? Yikes.

You must have owned a lot of lithium carts
Thanks for the advice

Maybe the golf cart industry can grovel for tariff carve-outs like many other industries have done. They have to ask very nicely though and be very thankful.

There is plenty of lithium in the USA...but mining is virtually illegal in the USA.
Sodium Ion batteries cant come soon enough :)

I didn't realize golf cart batteries were different than other lithium batteries. Good to know!

Lithium may be a thing of the past in 2-3 years anyway. The shorts are too darn dangerous.

It’s always been the better option just like with cars.
