Interesting but why isn't the data they researched included with their report? It would be wonderful to see the criteria that was evaluated so we could ascertain all biases, if any.. including ages, locations, area financial status, physician ages and training and so forth.

You have to subscribe to see it (on one of the links). Imo, the Abstract, alone, does not provide enough conclusiveness to warrant drawing a relevant conclusion. Next....

Closest one by a longshot

I guess you have never been to a profit based hospital. I have and the physicians were blatantly not communicative, and wouldn't talk to family members about patient's condition. . . also, they bankrupted the hospital by paying contracts to foreign consultants in eastern(?) europe. . .

The Pillaging of Steward Health Care

P/E has a modus operandi that pillages and piles on debt of acquired companies, have worked for similar companies, public, so these types of pillaging doesn't happen. So if a company was pillaging you, stealing cash and forcing companies into bankruptcy, you think that the service is excellent and outstanding?

I get that you don't trust headlines, but having experienced one of their (P/E) hospitals, i do find it believable.

What PE-owned hospitals exist in and around The VIllages?

What’s the policy recommendation? More government regulation of PE-owned hospitals?

p/e is just an egregious type of for-profit hospital, and I used P/E versus for profit due to the fact that I have used several for profit hospitals not by my choice, P/E was one, and Tenet hospitals was another.

For profit hospitals/Medical services around the villages are:

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital located in Ocala, FL, this hospital is part of the HCA Healthcare system.
HCA Florida Trailwinds Village Emergency Center
HCA Florida Summerfield Emergency Center

I am not into policy, regulation, etc, just trying to survive the misinformation to find the best information

I live in TV…. I fell one year ago and broke my patella in half ( you could visibly see this even without an X-ray) ….. called 911 and they took me to Leesburg hospital ER and when i questioned why, they told me that’s where the Orthopedic surgeon was. I was X-rayed and confirmed I needed surgery but there was actually not an on call surgeon there, they were at TV hospital but the surgeon, Dr Alfred J Cook didn’t feel it was necessary for me to be transferred there and they discharged me. In Leesburgs defense, the staff tried for 5 hours to get me transferred knowing I needed emergency surgery but also told me that TV didn’t want to take me due to in being a Friday and the weekend etc. I was shocked but most importantly, due to the delay it took me to find a surgeon and get the surgery on my own resulted in 4 surgeries and a fifth on the way and my leg is stuck straight due to scar tissue formation which most definitely occurred due to the delay in surgery. So, YES, the right ER can make all the difference.

Are you also considering the Medicare 5 start rating system?

Leesburgh hospital has treated me great for some serious cardio procedures, excellent care.
My wife went to The VIllages ER once and it was a disaster, but that was some years back.
Just our experience so far.

Where is a certified Level 1 trauma center hospital and the closest one? That would be the place to go. Wait, that is, I’m pretty sure, “a bridge too far” and as my grandson would say, “Grandpa that really sucks”. The HCA trauma center in Ocala is a private for profit hospital. That said, Leesburg for an emergency heart issue is your best bet close to The Villages IMHO.

What a nightmare! Good luck with future surgeries but don't have it performed in Florida.

Thank you. I actually just got back from a consultation with a surgeon in Cincinnati and there’s another in Colorado I might try too. No way I’d ever do anything in Florida again and I was born in that same hospital in Orlando where this nightmare has been ongoing.

I've always felt the hospitals/ERs were the weakest link in TV. For a community of some 150k +/- surprisingly it seems to lack any clout to get this corrected.

It's positively weird. I grew up in Tulsa when it only had a population of 200K. There were 5 excellent hospitals to choose from. But here, in a community of 150K old people, it's a half-hour ambulance ride to a backwater p***ant little hospital I wouldn't have taken my kids to for a tonsillectomy.

How do I know this? Because when my wife had a stroke last year, they took her to the "best" stroke hospital in the area -- HCA Ocala. It took me 45 minutes to get there, following the ambulance, and when I asked the receptionist to buzz me through the door, she ordered me to sit down and wait my turn. Five minutes later, a face appears at the window, points to me, asks my name, and finally lets me through.

Their first question -- over an hour after the 911 call? "Do we have your permission to administer a clot buster?"

WHAT???!!! YOU HAVEN'T DONE THAT ALREADY??

"No, we were afraid of a brain bleed"

But it's OBVIOUSLY a deep vein thrombosis that started as chest pain when she moved off the couch! Did you scan for a bleed?

"Yes, there is no bleed and we can see the clot."

So you're asking my permission to save my wife's life? Yes, dammit! Give her the clot buster!

"OK, sign here... and here... and here... and here..."

It's a miracle she survived, and with no lasting problems. I certainly don't credit her Florida healthcare.
