Electrician with sauna wiring experiece
 

We’ve recently installed a sauna at the house. Our electrician, Pike, doesn’t have experience wiring a sauna (reading a wiring diagram). All they are able to do is run the 220V 40A service and connect externally. We need to install power module and heater internally.

Anyone know of an electrician with sauna install experience and/or ability to following a wiring diagram?

I suspect they are giving you an excuse because they do not want to work inside the sauna. I am sure that I could do this (former professional electrical engineer), but I am not licensed. You might try calling the manufacturer of the sauna to see if they have a field service person to install the necessary equipment, then your electrician can complete the 240 vac supply.

Call Spa Kingdom/Florida Pool and Spa. They have technicians that do this every day.

Hi Mr. Highley, Casandra with Pike's Electric here. To shed further light, the installation of the internal components of the sauna power module and heater should be done by a company specializing in these connections. Although a wiring diagram may be present to do so, we do not preform these installations for any saunas, spas, pool equipment, etc. as it would make us liable for the internal parts/actual appliances. Once this is completed internally we plan to return to make our connection on the outside of the sauna and make sure everything powers up properly.

Already did AND had Pike speak with the manufacturer - couldn’t help.

There are four wires - if someone can follow the wiring diagrams provided, I’m happy to assume the liability. The manufacturer even made themselves available to walk your technician through the process of connecting the four wires… happy to assume the liability.

I had a bedroom and pool bath added to my house as part of an extension/pool project in 2014. Inside the pool bath, I had a rather large sauna built in. It extends from inside the pool bath out onto the pool deck with large windows on three sides. PSL was the general contractor for the job. However, I had to get Lake Sumter to do all the electric wiring etc. for the sauna oven, lighting, power control box etc. The did a great job. I'm not sure how many other saunas they have wired, but I know they will remember this one. If you can't find anyone who can do it, call Bobby at Lake Sumter Electric. They are fast, honest and do great work.

I’m not an electrician, but this is an easy task as long as you can get an electrician to install the 220V 40A service with enough length of #8 AWG Romex to run through the conduit that goes where you install the sauna heater. We have a sauna in our northern home and had an electrician run us a dedicated 220 servive. I then easily hooked up the wires to the heater following the manufacturers wiring diagram (that was 18 years ago and it still works perfectly). Just be sure to turn off the circuit before doing the wiring job. I’m flying down to our Villages home in a few days and would be happy to help you if you still haven’t gotten it wired.

Not so easy, there are 2 controllers involved and a 240 volt selector switch. The documentation provided were great for each controller, and OK for the switch. The problem was the manufacturer did not provide any information about how to connect or setup the second controller, or what to do with the switch. I spent an hour at the homeowner's house, reviewed all 4 pieces of documentation and instructions and there was no info on how to connect the additional control and heater. My recommendation was to contact the manufacturer and get specific wiring diagrams how to make the connections so that BOTH sets of controls will work.

Dam VT, sounds complicated. If you can’t figure out that configuration, I certainly can’t. Why does all this new stuff have to be so complicated, I so miss the simplicity of the way they used to make stuff. The below picture shows the heater in our sauna, which has only two controls that are built into the heater, the heat output and the timer. I taped the heat output control into place so it can’t be changed, since it is set where I like it and got tired of people messing with the setting. To use it, just turn on the timer and wait about ten minutes and the sauna gets to about 145 degrees, then scoop some water over the lava rocks and it rapidly gets to about 160 delightful and steamy degrees. It was very easy to wire, just strip the wires and attach to the screws in the terminal box as outlined in the owners manual. I had to lay it flat so I could access the terminal box on the bottom of the heater, then lift and hang the heater on the mounting brackets.
