Murphy bed removal
 

Hi all,

Has anyone done this? Can you recommend someone that could remove the bed and repair the wall if necessary?

The ones I have seen were held in place with a few lag bolts into the studs. If this is the case removal should be fairly straight forward, the repair to the wall should also be simple. However, take a look at the floor molding this may need to be replaced as this may have been removed for the bed frame.

Two types:
wall stud lag bolts or screws, obvious when bed is down
floor mounted bolts, obvious when bed is down

wall mount - support cabinet with 2x4 pushing it back against the wall or run screws from outside cabinet angled in to wall stud at top. Once secure, remove the bolts/screws that were already there. Use rope, strap or duct tape to secure bed back into position to cabinet. Remove entire unit.

floor mount - cabinet is usually screwed to wall, BUT bed frame/springs/strut strength are secured to floor using bolts. With bed down, remove nuts holding spring/struts to floor. Bed will pull out from cabinet. Unscrew cabinet from wall. Cabinet will be shaky and can break apart. It is nothing more than a shell. Once away, you will see 3 bolts sticking up through concrete. Cut off with angle grinder.

If you want to give it away for free, put it on Marketplace. Explain they will have to remove it from wall or floor and you will handle the holes.

Both types are 2 person jobs. I have removed and installed both. For all the work involved, I gave mine away for free on Marketplace and replaced them myself for a nicer style.

You can PM me if you want some pics of the floor mounted coming out. Took them so the Facebook response person would know what they were getting.

Great info, so there may be holes in the flooring to consider also, I did not think about those, so finding replacement matching flooring could be involved. I love hearing from people that have actually done this work. I was coming from observations and a review of an installation manual for a wall mounted unit.
