Joint Replacement in Modern Times

I posted not long ago about my hip replaced 2 weeks ago and I'm doing great.

Born and raised in the Midwest, I can't help thinking about the poor people that farmed in Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Wisconsin or Michigan that suffered from bad hips, aching knees and bad backs in the 1920, 1930 and 1940's when there wasn't such a thing called joint replacements.

They had to milk cows in sub-zero temps and handle heavy milk cans with joint pain that (I'm sorry to say} they took their pain to their graves.

Thank God for modern medicine.

Good to hear your procedure had a good outcome ! Todays modern medical technology is indeed amazing. The problem being that the demand is growing with an aging population, a area that expects zero errors. People blame the high cost on drug companies, insurance companies , lack of government provided health care. How well a balance can be struck is a question that we will have to live with. I have often wondered about a system that makes no cost difference between those who work against their own health and those who make a greater effort to stay healthy

OP, I had a knee replacement a few years ago, and my surgical knee is better than my good knee! Full range of motion, no pain, no issues.

My wife and I are in medicine, and most bad outcomes are due to people not taking physical therapy seriously. The outcome of a joint replacement is directly tied to how seriously people take their PT.

The surgeon’s job is done in 3 hours. The patient’s job takes 12 months. The patient decides whether scar tissue builds up and prevents a well functioning joint.
