Handicap pass

Reading a letter to editor the writer states a handicap pass on a golf cart that you use on a golf course cannot be used in handicap parking in regular parking lots. Anyone know if that’s true.

In order to get a Reasonable Accommodation pass for the golf course, one must first have a handicap pass issued by the state for their car.

The RA pass is issued by The Villages and is only meant for the golf courses.

You already have a state issued handicap pass, so why not use that for parking a car? It has a number printed on it that links to your driver's license. The police who (sometimes) enforce parking laws are not required to honor the Villages RA pass.

Some people fear that if they put their state issued handicap pass in the golf cart, it will be stolen. A valid fear. I have seen some people make a photocopy of their handicap pass and use that in the golf cart.

And while on the subject, please, please do not park in the striped area next to the handicapped parking. That area is needed by some people to access their car and ramp or scooter.

We were able to get an additional handicap placard for the golf cart, along with the golf RA for my wife. So far, we have not had any problems with anything being stolen.

The poster did not have the quote from article correct. Letter to the editor was saying a cars handicapped placard could not be used for a golf cart to park in a car handicapped spot. So sad that I cannot post the actual link. If that fact is true good luck telling that person parking in the spot.

That fact appears to be untrue. See post #3 or the Florida statutes.

I just had an able bodied guy block me by parking IN the hash marks at a handicap spot. He said it was a “commercial use” spot, like a loading zone. We had a nice conversation about that being totally wrong, but he just didn’t get it.

In our community, we go to the community center, and they give us a handicap sticker to use for handicap parking in our community. Only need to show a State-issued Handicap Sticker from any State.

Sounds like your community is not the Villages.

In a private community one might use a private handicap sticker to park in handicap spots on private roads.

In a public community, like our Villages, one needs a state-issued handicap placard (or plate) to park in handicap spots on the public roads.

We do issue private "handicap passes" for use on our private golf courses but they are not state-issued and therefore not valid for handicap spots on public roads.

Yes, a golf cart can park in a car handicap spot in Florida if it displays a valid Florida handicap placard or license plate, as golf carts are treated the same as other vehicles for handicap parking purposes. The driver must have the proper, legally issued documentation to use the handicap space, and the placard must be displayed correctly.

Does anyone know the exact statute regarding the golf cart in a car handicapped parking spot?
I’ve always been curious what the law states. I have a handicap placard and a license plate. But I’ve never used it on my golf cart to park in the handicapped spaces for cars. I honestly don’t think we should. I also understand that there are entitled people everywhere that will do what they want to do.

CarlR33 08-28-2025 10:21 AM

According to the State Statute it’s a disabled parking permit and not vehicle specific to an automobile.

There is no exact statute regarding a golf cart in a handicapped spot.

There is a statute regarding a handicap pass (316.1955) which reads (in part):
It is unlawful for any person to stop, stand, or park a vehicle within, or to obstruct, any such specially designated and marked parking space provided in accordance with s. 553.5041, unless the vehicle displays a disabled parking permit issued under s. 316.1958 or s. 320.0848 or a license plate issued under s. 320.084, s. 320.0842, s. 320.0843, or s. 320.0845, and the vehicle is transporting the person to whom the displayed permit is issued.

No mention of four wheels, license plate, automobile, registration, lsv, or anything else, just the word "vehicle." Every definition of a golf cart that I could find in the Florida statutes calls them vehicles.

As for entitled: Is it your belief that disabled people do not ride in golf carts or does riding in a golf cart somehow make someone less disabled than if they were riding in a car?

Totally disagree. Driving a golf cart does not make you any less disabled, does it ?
