Home Depot/garage door opener

Has anyone purchased a new garage door opener from Home Depot and had their contractor do the installation? If you did this are you satisfied with the install?

I am also in the market for a new garage door opener, which will probably be a Chamberlain belt drive type. However, you should know that Home Depot does not have their own contractors. They hire third party subcontractors who they may or may not have ever contracted with previously. So, some posters may have had a good experience, but there is no guarantee that whoever installed their opener will be the same company who will install your opener. I will not be hiring Home Depot because I just don't like their concept. I intend to get a quote from Scott Cowan, 352-697-0321, who gave me a quote of about $350, but that was a few years ago. Good luck.

The Chamberlin units are fairly easy to install, I suggest you check for a local handyman to do this. I have installed about 8 of these over the years, helping neighbors. With 2 ladders and a second person this can be completed is around 2 hours. On a side note, if you use some washers, it is possible to reuse the old MVP bracket at the door header, and you can buy some additional angle with holes and add this to the new opener to be able to use the original ceiling mount. All of this saves a lot of time.

Home Depot uses Clopay Garage door to do their install.

HomeDepot has a special on Genie Openers. $99 Installation. Expires 11/2.

Installing a garage door opener isn't brain surgery. You shouldn't have any problem with one of HD's installers. Beware of "extras".

Thanks, but I am confused. Clopay is located in Tampa. Are you sure that Clopay employees will be installing a garage door opener that you buy from Home Depot? If so, why not just call Clopay?

Home Depot is one of many Clopay dealers like Romac, etc. I just looked on Home Depot and you can price out DIY or have installed (by one of their contract vendors). Unless you do a straight out DIY your going to pay about the same prices for a dealer to install.

I'm still confused. Are you saying that, if I buy the opener from Home Depot, one of their contract vendors will install the opener, or will it be installed by a Clopay employee? I have no interest in installing the opener myself or having it installed by a Home Depot contract vendor who Home Depot doesn't even know. I find it difficult to believe that Clopay is paying people to travel from Tampa to install garage door openers. Looking at their website, it appears that their main business is garage doors, not openers.

In MA, we used Precision Door Services, and they did a fantastic job, fixed price, with Wifi, camera, remotes, wall unit and outside coded opener, for $799 fully installed each door. They will only install their GD Openers. .

In FL, same company, is located at
Address: 4070 Co Rd 124A Ste A, Wildwood, FL 34785
Areas served: Lady Lake and nearby areas
Phone: (352) 254-4758
Appointments: precisiondoornorthcentralfl.com

It might be a difficult DIY project without tools, on a ladder, even with tools for some people, I can do somethings, but lifting and holding units in place and bolting them on at the same time is now long longer what I can do. .

good luck

Clopay is a distributor and has no install people. You cannot even buy an opener directly from them you have to go through a dealer like Home Depot or Romac (type your zip into their field and it will provide their sellers) . If you get an opener from Home Depot they will contact a vendor for install.

Home Depot knows their installation vendors and they're "approved" by Home Depot. That's sort of like being approved to use the McDonald's App at the Drive Thru window.

Call Scott at *(352) 697-0321‬, if you want it done right.

That is what I thought. The OP said that Clopay does the install, but that is obviously not correct. My issue with Home Depot is that they will hire anyone, and that means that they are not hiring top quality installers. Top quality installers do not need to go through Home Depot to get business. Although, having a large company like Home Depot may help if you have an installation problem.

FYI, there was another thread where someone bought a water heater from Lowe's, and the Lowe's installer wanted $3,000 to install the water heater. Mike Scott Plumbing will furnish and install a water heater for about $900.

Yes, price less than $300.

EviesGP 09-02-2025 06:37 PM

I did purchase one from HD and had their contractor install it. It was about 4-5yrs ago, but I think it was $80 to install, and he did a good job. However, I also purchased another belt drive opener for the golf cart garage, and installed it myself. I only needed a 2nd ladder and didn’t need any help. Not hard.
