Rats in the attic!

After hearing some thumping around in the garage attic space we had Massey come out and do an inspection.

Two rats found in the garage attic storage area and other evidence of presence in other attic areas.

Massey has a program to remove, clean, sanitize, seal all possible external access points then monitor weekly until no presence detected.

$2500 ......

Any experience or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks.

$2500!!
Another few quotes would be my advice.

2500 American dollars? They can only come in one way and that is up a tree/bush and into an opening, usually into soffit area or between roof and fascia. Not sure what they are offering as far as what you get for thousands of dollars, but all they are going to do is simply seal up a hole or two (1"x1") and toss some glue traps up there and then check back periodically.

I think I would call around and get a few more quotes, then settle on someone for less than 1k. We did and were very happy. Unfortunately for my neighbors, he moved his business up to Gainesville.

Sounds high to me. I recommend calling Liberty Exterminators & Wildlife Removals for a second quote. Veteran owned and operated. Licensed and insured. They will handle any pest problem you have without going through a large company. Very reasonable pricing. Free inspections. I call Jason at 352-721-5248 for all of our interior and exterior pest control problems.

In my cosmopolitan city up north with Chanel stores and Lamborghini dealers, it costs $100 to $400 to get mice out of the attic. Something is VERY wrong with Massey’s quote unless it included rebuilding the attic.

I remove any food for rodents in my yard. Keep queen palms trimmed up and all seed pods cut out and no bird feeders even those I like birds. I keep close eye on soffit area and make sure no squirrels are chewing holes. If squirrels spend time in my yard or too many I trap them out and release them in open areas away from housing. Rodents (squirrels IMO are rodents) has to chew hole somewhere in house for them to get it.

Get another pest control company to put a couple bait boxes in the yard and your rats will go away . That is unless they are too BIG to get in the box!

Seems like a very high price.

Emkay56 09-17-2025 07:27 AM

That sounds awful expensive to me! Maybe get another quote?

Have you considered a few mouse traps loaded with peanut butter. I would think that expense wouldn’t add up to $2500. My method is to put a couple of dabs of peanut butter out for free and watch them. After seeing they have been eaten then I put the peanut butter on a trap. Works every single time. To make it more exciting sometimes I wear a green shirt and give my wife a bill for $2500.00.

Sad to say this is a common problem. There are many people that are not able to get into their attics and see evidence of rat infestation that may have been going on for years. Maybe there is no evidence in your small storage area above the garage but maybe just around the corner up in the attic. These creatures are very evasive and will find a way even if no evidence is found under the gutters. They can climb up the downspouts and gain access to your attic from the roof. Once in the pheromone trail attracts more rats. If you can you may want to take a look up in your attic or get an inspection. These rodents carry many diseases. Know of at least 3 people I have met on the golf courses that have had this problem.
