Saturday Spanish Springs Happy Hour and B-17 & B-24

Really cool last night at the Spanish Springs Happy Hour when the B-24 Liberator and B-17 Flying Fortress flew right overhead. They are in Leesburg this weekend and can be seen up until noon on Monday. Allan.

Did you know this was going to happen, or did they just show up?

There is not a prettier sight. I, when I lived in S. Florida, used to visit them at the Boca Raton airport every year. May try to get over to Leesburg to catch them taking off.

No - didn't have a clue it was going to happen - just nice that they did it. Allan.

Thanks. I am sorry we missed it, but at least it was not for lack of planning. My husband was a B-17 pilot in WWII and would go see them on Marco Island and Naples when we lived in South Florida. Too bad he missed them yesterday.

If you would like to see a good display of flying, the Senior Soaring Championships will take place at Seminole Lake Gliderport March 13 to 19. The airstrip is 10 miles south of Groveland on highway 33 - east of 33 on South Fork Ranch Road. Pick a sunny day and take a lunch - the launch will take place between 11 am and 1 pm depending on the conditions - you'll see 60 gliders launched by 5 or 6 Pawnee towplanes in under an hour - that's one a minute! Of course, once they have launched it's about as exciting as watching paint dry - actually paint dries quicker - but the launch is pretty intense and exciting. Before the launch starts you will be able to look at the aircraft and most of the pilots are pretty friendly but once the launch starts you must stay off to the side of the runway. Yes, I am a glider pilot but I will not be competing. Allan.

I saw those same bombers flying west today around 11:00AM. I was on 466A and they appeared to be a little north of 466. The second one was about 5minutes behind the first. I guess they were leaving Leesburg heading to wherever they stop next. I can always remember taking a tour of those bombers several years ago and talking to a man who told me he was used to seeing those bombers from on the ground as the bombs were dropping on his city.
