Spring plants
 

I've been feeling a little nostalgic about our "up north" home. At about this time of year the kids and I would be looking for signs of spring. An ice cream would be awarded to whomever spotted the first robin and we would be looking for buds on plants.
So I got to wondering if some of our prized spring plants were here in TV. I haven't seen a Crocus or Pussy Willow to name two. Do they bloom here?

I too am a bit nostalgic for "what was"! I miss the robins and northern songbirds. Then there is the daffodils, crocis's and tulips. I also miss lilacs! Though we could go to the store and purchase some petunias, geraniums etc. and plant in pots. I probably will do that soon!!!

Take a drive along Buena Vista around the Stillwater circle and look at the Azaleas under the big live oaks -- that's my idea of Spring in TV, and in March!!!

Petunias are more of a winter plant here, like pansies, although the petunias need to be covered in heavy frost and might not look good for a while but they usually come back if partially frost damaged. This is my first full season, but I understand that the petunias will die out once it gets hot, probably around April sometime, maybe May? I don't think geraniums will look too good in the summer either, but not as sure about them.

There are wonderful alternatives though, that we can't grow up north. I planted my first pentas - not sure if that's just a southern flower or not, but I never heard of them up north. So far they are not impressive, but perhaps I just need patience - and more fertilizer - and fewer rabbits :)

I recently came across the most magnificent wisteria's both lavender and white somewhere on the outskirts of TV; unfortunately I can't remember where.:rolleyes:
