government shutdown

If there is a government shutdown guess who still gets paid? Bet you didn't need 3 guesses. That's right our Senators and Reps. will get paid even though the government is shut down and there is nothing for them to do. An absolute disgrace but are any of you surprised?

If there is a government shutdown, Waynet, not only will your Congressmen get paid, the entire Executive, Legislative, and Judical branches get paid. Some Federal government employees deemed "essential" will be at their jobs but most will be at home. The paychecks will be held up for the short time the shutdown is happening, but then the back pay comes to everyone. Check back for the 1995 government shutdown to see what it cost the taxpayers. You can easily Google it to find out.

You do not want to see a Federal government shutdown. Social Security checks will be slowed or stopped during the shutdown, veterans benefits will be withheld for the time, Medicare payments to doctors will be stopped for that time, and even national parks will close.

Sometimes I think we'd be better off if we paid Congress twice as much if they promised to do nothing.

Everybody knows the government "shutdown" position

is nothing more than a political game. Just another one of those so easy to solve problems that will be left as is under the business as usual in Washington.

A stupid partisan game.

Billy is 100% right. A government shutdown is a stupid partisan political game played by BOTH parties.

Not true.

But anyway, guess who decides who gets paid and who doesn't? That would be the Executive Branch... Mr. Pres.

Obama submitted a budget that he KNEW would cause this... on purpose because he thinks the GOP will take the hit.

By the by, why when the democrats controlled the house, the senate and the presidency did they not pass any budge at all the last time around?

Me smells a rat.

How can anyone blame the tea party republicans for a government "furlough", when they passed HR1 in the house to fund the government this fiscal year, the demos in control of the senate have not even tried to pass any kind of bill, and the dems when the controlled the house, the senate, and the presidency, didnt even try to pass any budget bill for this entire year.

They can, they will and the mainstream media will be right there helping them.

Watch and see.

Not different than whomever the GOP nominee will be in 2012. They will get dragged through the dirt in every way conceivable by the liberals, the left, unions and the general media at large.

Watch and see.

If you listen to the media now, it is all about the "tea party"...there is very little, if any notice given to or remarks about the fact the the Democratic Senate has not even tried to come up with anything.

It is, and if you heard the clips from Howard Dean and Schumer, the policy of the Democratic party to hope for a shutdown and blame it on right wing extremists.

Where are the responsible media ?

Guest 03-31-2011 07:05 PM

Fox and AM radio.

Anyone here heard the audio clip from Schumer?

I sure did and the remarks by Dean about he and the Democrats would "not be unhappy if there was a shutdown" and how it could be used for political purposes

Guest 03-31-2011 07:11 PM

You hear it on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN or MSNBC?

I actually READ the Schumer remarks and do not recall the site, but just googled it and if anyone wants to get the idea...

The Dean comments, believe it or not, were on MSNBC Morning Joe show as I recall !

DKLassen - Yes, it is true that Social Security checks would be slowed or held up if there is a Federal Government shutdown. Other Federal government programs would also be held up as well.

It is also true, as I stated in my posting, that a shutdown is a complete waste of money for taxpayers. It is the fault of both parties. Federal employees who stay at home will still get their full pay after being called back to work at the end of the shutdown.

Guest 03-31-2011 09:35 PM

"That's exactly what happened in 1995-1996. While some Social Security Administration employees were sent home, the agency's official written history notes that essential staff stayed on to make sure benefits were paid."

"The majority of the employees retained were in direct service positions to ensure the continuance of benefits to currently enrolled Social Security."

The government, especially the Democrats are out of control. Time for a reboot. Get spending under control or SHUT IT DOWN. Oh how will we survive without the government tucking us in at night for a few weeks???

The horror of it all!!

It's amazing we've survived at all the last 234 years. :cryin2:
