Water Conditioners - Which One?

I'd like to buy a water conditioning unit but was wondering if I could get some feedback on the different kinds, approximate cost, etc. I have had one in a previous home that periodically required salt. Is this the best kind? I also have heard of one that does not require salt but the cost is way up there. Any recommendations? Thanks for any input.

Would you mind listing the reasons why you feel it is necessary? Since I've only been at my house for short visits I'd like to know what the water issues are. I haven't found any yet at my home in Buttonwood.

Thanks.

Instead of all that expensive equipment, I had Mandy of Pro Plumbers install in the garage a water filter for the entire house, costs around $400, and well worth the job. Nothing is wrong with the water in TV, but the filter you can see thru the plastic case start to turn an orange color as months go by.

You change the filter approx every 3 months or so, get them at Lowe's for around $30
One of the main reasons I went with it, he installed a new hot water tank and showed me all the white stuff build up in the bottom of it, which you wont have with this water filter, making your hot water tank last much longer.
