Sprinkler Screens
 

I have been informed that there are filter screens as part of my irrigation system that need to be cleaned out (house only 3 years old). I've owned several houses in my lifetime and I've never heard of this maintenance requirement before. I do understand the need to have the grass trimmed away from the sprinkler heads occasionally.

Can anyone give me a clue about this bit of upkeep and who would do it, if necessary? Is this just a make-work project or have I been neglectful all these years?

Your input and advise will be greatly appreciated, as always.

Anybody who's competent at working with sprinkler systems should be able to check/clean yours for you.

My husband and son just started cleaning ours and we've been in our house one year here. They found quite a few plugged and one actually had glue in it from when it was installed. Just tedious and a lot of messy work but can be done by yourself or hire someone.

There is really no good reason to clean the sprinkler screens on a scheduled basis. Just observe the flow and operation of your sprinklers. If any appear to have reduced or partial flow, then you can remove the head and clean the screen. Very simple to do.

Thanks eeveryone for the information. Clearly this is an area that I should address. However, it appears it's not something I would enjoy doing myself so I'll have to find a contractor or handy-man to investigate and do the necessary cleaning.
